Had a friend that drank two beers everyday when he came home from work- He asked that question to a counselor at a CDU unit- Counselor ask my friend a simple question

Can you go 30 days without a drink? Friend tries it, answer is no-- He admitted himself to the unit

so - lay off the stuff for 30 days- if you can maybe you have nothing to worry about- if you can't you have a problem

Your friend is a dumbass

I love all the definitive "yes" answers when there are other factors to consider.

It's like people using BMI to determine what is considered fat.

I make a 20 oz foamer of whiskey every night. A fifth is about 26 ounces. Each foamer with ice will kill a fifth in about three pours. It is not as much as you'd think.

That's not normal drinking dude. Thats a lot. That's kinda like saying "I grill a 20oz T-bone steak every night. I eat about 3 of them before I go to bed. "

Walt, we need to meet up at the Vineyard on Coursey. Festus' gf is always there. She has a real lazy eye but knows how to give a rusty trombone.

If you are in college or your twenties you are fine.

If you work in manual labor, oil field, sales, service industry, or law then you are fine.

If your wife is a fat whiny bitch then you are fine.

If you have kids, a thin well behaved wife, and work in front of a computer all day then yes you are a drunk.

My normal response is if you personally have to ask, then yea, you probably are.

I thought if you were lucid enough to ask, then you probably weren't? As in, true drunks never think they have a problem.

I normally go to the vineyard on Christmas Eve because it's one of the few places open near where my parents live

Thanks for the comments. Seriously.

I am 49. Have been a pretty heavy drinker (i.e., LSU fan) for much of my adult life. I'm a lawyer. I actually do have an off button. Every year or two I will give it up during Lent, no problem. My tolerance level is pretty high. My drinking has never affected my work to any large degree, although there have been times I find sitting at a bar much more pleasurable than sitting at a desk. When I drink really extra hard, it's not so much to get drunk as to get numb. But that's certainly not every night.

I do need to dial it back.

ETA: Last night I had about 4 gin and tonics (and my pour is liberal). Got up this morning and rode my bike 15 miles on the levee.

I've done a lot of work with my company's EAP, mainly as an advocate for those that were pushed into the program for the wrong reasons. Based on what you just posted I'd say you're good. Not affecting work, family life, health, in a negative way, but just enjoying it, I don't see an issue.

that's supposed to raise eye brows btw, it shouldn't, lots of people do physical mind/mood altering things to temporarily numb them from life

To OP: Who cares if you're an alcoholic? Just drink with passion, drink with commitment. Drink like it's the last drink you'll ever have.

Two "yes" responses indicate that the possibility of alcoholism should be investigated further.

The questionnaire asks the following questions:

Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?

Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?

Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
