I work part time in IT. Most every computer issue is caused when someone downloads a bunch of shite on their work computer that they shouldn't.

Spent half the day today fixing a woman's computer who corrupted all her files downloading all kinds of toolbars and programs (none of them work related).

Bitch please, you couldn't even turn on a computer.

I used to audit IT departments. So everyone here probably hates me.

I have a love hate with you. I hate audit time but I love that you force the execs to let me do all the security shite that I have been wanting to do for years.

One of my peers just purchased and ran a program that sweeps the entire network for Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. He was blown away by the numbers of excel files and other files that were open unencrypted containing confidential information on their network.

I'm in IT...

I'm not the "help desk" type.

I'm a windows admin for a specialized system that is heavily regulated.

I HATE audit time.

IT sounds interesting but with a CS degree in the next year ill probably just start out as a Dev..Anyone know perks of working IT vs. Software Development? It seems IT guys get a more laid back schedule for one...Pay? Hours worked? I had a friend of my dad's tell me he used to be a programmer and hated it..but..grain of salt

I am a sysadmin/network admin. I am expected to be on call pretty much 24/7/365

I work in IT.

-I mostly wear Nike pants and tshirts, sometimes coveralls. I'm not in a traditional office environment though (oilfield), and everyone else here pretty much dresses the same.
-no neckbeard, I'm usually clean shaven.
-If everything is up and running, I've done my job.
-if your computer is freezing up... its your fault
-i could find out what everyone is doing, but honestly after 12 years of doing this I don't care anymore. I've seen it all.

They wear what they want. They look like hobos most of the time. Everone has a neck beard.

They dont do shite. My computer is always freezing up.

And they have dirt on everyone. That's why I'm posting here and not telling them to their face they aint shite.

End of rant.

I wish I could wear what I want.

An IT person that never seems to be doing shite is a sign of a solid network. It's the IT guy always having to put out fires that should raise flags. Even when it seems like we're not doing shite, we usually are more busy than anyone can imagine.

Unless you're working for NASA or some other high level dev company, chances are you will get burned out in pure software dev. In general, you get worked to death without a whole lot of pay. I did it for four years before expanding into the network and admin side of the house. I have both skillsets now and still do write code every now and again, but I spend way more time on networking and administration now.

I work in IT and there is indeed a lot of downtime but the job can also be super stressful especially in my case working for a financial institution
