I need to go to Matamoros for business, any advice?

So we are setting up temporary operations in Mexico, specifically Matamoros and Tampico.
My plan is to swing and spend about 24 hours, and then leave. I won't be leaving the area around the airport for either city. Will be going with a Mexican business partner, but he is from the south part of Mexico.
Am I going to die? In seriousness, does anyone have any advice, I've looked at the State Department website but it basically says that I shouldn't travel to Matamoros or Tampico at all. That's not really an option for me.

You fought valiantly in the meme war. I am sorry to see you go out this way.

I drove through Matamoros once... actually twice, coming and going... and I didn't die. I also didn't get out of the truck other than at the border crossing.

What kind of business? You can't just do a web conference or something?
I'm sure its fine if you don't make yourself a target and dress extravagant and go in to the shady areas.

make sure your life insurance policy is up to date

It's with the airport there. Not to reveal too much, but as we are starting up in Matamoros for the first time, someone has to do a recon of the site.

Do you trust this guy with your life?
You better.
Dress local, avoid public places and interacting with anyone outside your group if at all possible.
Or better yet, don't go.

Your company should provide a driver/bodyguard. They aren't that expensive to hire and their main function is to drive you around and make sure you don't make a wrong turn or wander into the wrong area.

My advice...send someone else.

Stay in Brownsville and drive over each day.
I'd consider hiring a body guard for security.
I used to have to go over the border for the job but I won't do it anymore. If one of my customers needs to see me they can come into the US on my side of the border.

Sounds great, but the driver probably works for the Messican cartel.

When I was a kid in Texas we used to go to Matamoras a lot. This was the 80's though.

Our Company had a fabrication shop there. When one of our guys went to train the Mexicans working at the shop, he was pulled over on a main road by the cops and they had to pay the cops off. They were in a rental and the cops wanted their insurance papers showing their names for the car. They tried to explain, but in the end they had to pay the cop off. One guy with them spoke Spanish and that's how they figured what the cop wanted.
So I would say you need a translator/ bodyguard and you definitely need a little bit of cash to pay them off if you get stopped for anything and they pull some shite on you. Shady shite over there. The guy said he would never go back there unless it was a shite ton of money.

Spring break Padre was actually pretty awesome in the 80's when you could go to Matamoros at night and not be worried.

The state dept should trump avarice.
You are making a business decision.
No wife and kids. Just go.
If people depend on you, come down with flu and interview.

Kidnapping Insurance is a requirement.
US State Department on Crime Threats: There are no safe areas in Matamoros due to gunfights, grenade attacks, and kidnappings, all of which can take place anytime, anywhere.
