write an equation using pythagorean theorem to determine sides a & b using a right angle triangle assuming a=b.

Is that figureoutable only having the hypotenuse?

Yes because you told us it is a right triangle

Sin 45 = a/144

Cos 45 = b/144

2a^2=144^2

You solve.

Given a & b are equal.

I have an X,Y location and have to figure out footage calls. That's easy at N, S, E & W.

I need the formula to do NE, SE, SW & NW.

The equation is a^2 + b^2 = 144.

a=b, so 2(a^2)=144.

ETA, misread and assumed the hypotenuse was 12.

Basically I know the spot I'm looking for is 144' dead NE from my x,y location.

I need to know how many feet E and then how many feet N from my X,Y to arrive at the point 144' away.

You didn't square c...

Nope. The equation is a^2 + b^2 = 144^2.

101.82 E, 101.82 N

Several ways to get there...

101.82 feet north, 101.82 feet east.

Yeah, when I saw 144 I just jumped to the assumption the hypotenuse was 12.
