Last night we started smelling a kind of burnt plastic smell coming from the AC (Lennox). I turned it off immediately, and tried to determine the source of the smell.

It seems that the blow is still blowing, just at a significantly lower output. After letting it sit for an hour I turned it back on and again after about 3-4 minutes it started to stink again.

I grabbed my multimeter and it seems that the capacitor is no longer functioning. I want to replace the capacitor, but the Lennox Parts store is only for licensed dealers. So I found a neighborhood parts store which opens tomorrow, but I'm concerned I won't find the correct OEM part.

Can I replace the capacitor with the same spec'd part if it isn't the part designated by the manufacturer?

Any other thoughts about what the problem could be?

Are you referring to the capacitor on the outside condensing unit?

No, the capacitor on the blower. The run capacitor.

Just bring it by the A/C suppply store and they'll match it up with one of the same specs.

You could always try, the local AC shop here is for license repairman only, but they never ask when I buy parts. Might get lucky.

Mine went out a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening. Had a friend who knew an hvac and got one. It was a dual element one that started both my fan and compressor. As long as it is the right specs and micros, i wouldn't worry about it.

Hot smell could be the fan motor going out.

I think it started due to the filter being very dirty (even though its only about 1-2 months old), and it overheated the unit.

We had quite a bit of work done in house (hardwood floors, and some dry-wall) and it created a shite-ton of dust. I was an idiot and didn't think about the filter.

Youtube has tons of videos on this topic. And yes, any capacitor with the specs of your old one will work.

As long as it has the same specs as the OEM Cap you will be fine

Other than voiding your warrantee, if the specs match, no issues. Lennox does not likely make the cap themselves, your replacement could be theoretically be the exact same one without the OEM label.

During these two weeks? Quite a bit. My daughter has severe asthma, so the wife took the kids to Florida for the 10 days I was working on the house.

Because of the asthma we usually are constantly cleaning, so I only have to change every other month.

Yeah that dry wall dust will seal a filter tight!

Not sure about that smell though, maybe a motor or wiring that got hot.
