Gustav was
directly responsible for 112 deaths – 77 in Haiti, 15 in Jamaica, 8 in the Dominican Republic, 7
in Louisiana, 4 in Florida, and 1 at sea. The deaths in the Dominican Republic were due to a
landslide or mudslide. Five deaths in Louisiana were due to falling trees, while the other two
were caused by the EF2 tornado in Evangeline Parish. The deaths in Florida were drownings in
rip currents that were caused by high surf produced by the hurricane. In addition, there are 41
deaths indirectly associated with Gustav in Louisiana.

quote:

Due to the threat of significant storm flooding associated with the landfall of a major hurricane along the Louisiana Coast, widespread evacuations took place in south Louisiana from August 29th through the 31st. Preliminary estimates indicate that 1.9 million people evacuated from south Louisiana in advance of Hurricane Gustav, Gustav eventually made landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana, or about 70 miles southwest of New Orleans, on Labor Day morning, September 1st, as a strong Category Two Hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph. Gustav continued to move inland across south-central Louisiana as a hurricane, dropping to tropical storm status Monday evening.

Wind damage was significant in areas from the south-central coast of Louisiana through greater Baton Rouge with this hurricane. Power was knocked out for days, some areas longer, across this region, with numerous trees down and other related wind damage. A peak wind speed of about 91 mph was reported at Ryan Field in Baton Rouge, 108 and 117 mph near Houma, Louisiana, and 72 mph at Belle Chasse Naval Air Station. Two fatalities and one injury were the result of high winds toppling a large tree into a house in East Baton Rouge Parish. A 45 year old woman also was fatally injured in Livingston Parish when high winds toppled a large tree onto her mobile home. Rainbands associated with the weakening Gustav continued over the region through Tuesday, September 2nd. Tornadoes were reported near Abita Springs and Bush in St Tammany Parish, and Westwego in Jefferson Parish on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Damage included 35 to 40 structures damaged around Westwego, including 15 total losses.

That's crazy. Seems like yesterday. I wasn't worried about the storm, rather 20 coonasses from Avoyelles parish killing each other after being stuck in one house for 4 days straight.

Took the roof off my camp at False River and subsequently filled it with water. Place was destroyed. Lost my best childhood memories that day

I was a student at LSU and had to go to work cleaning up for the week or so that LSU was closed. All of my out of state friends were sitting around and having Hurricane parties.

I just remember that first game against App St. Brother in law, myself, and a buddy drove early that Saturday morning from Bridge City, TX to go to that crazy game that kicked off at like 10AM. When it was over we headed back to TX, to find that they were evacuating Bridge City where my parents lived because of the storm. We had to drive from there to Kingwood where I lived at the time, and my father was sick because he was going through chemo treatments, usually a 2 hr drive, but took almost 6 hours. I don't think we got to my house until after midnight.

We were in Baton Rouge visiting family before it hit Louisiana. Took 12 hours to get back to my apartment in Houston because of all the people evacuating. I did survive Hurricane Ike though.

The way this one hit where I was I thought it to be rougher than Katrina...again relative to where I was and what I seen personally. The wind was blowing hard.

Baton Rouge got wrecked. That red band coming over EBR in this radar shot is the strongest winds EBR received moving through the area.

The last frame of this gif shows a real rough band in between laffy and BR. I thought the storm had past and was sick of no power so i decided to drive home from LSU. Got trapped on the basin bridge while that thing went by. That was not very fun.

Hurricane Rita didn't form until Sept 18th. We got a couple more weeks to go before I feel a little more comfortable. I hate hurricanes.

Hottest I have ever been in Tiger Stadium

Stayed up and drank all night. They were handing out free water to the students to prevent dehydration. It was miserable.
