Size of Montana and three times the current population of Texas. It's always been densely populated.

Also during the world wars if you were old enough and able bodied, you fought.

You didn't have a choice.

Germany pre-1945 was about 33% larger and had around 80 million people. Then you had the conquered territories incorporated and ethnic Germans living abroad. Ukrainians, Lithuanians and other groups that hated the USSR also fought on the Axis side.

80 million people in 1939 even after being decimated by WWI.

That doesn’t include population in the territories they quickly took over and militarized.

The Germans (actually Prussians) basically invented the concept of a modern conscript based, well trained large standing army based on a combination of a regular standing army coupled with large reserves of those who's time in the regular army had expired. This allowed them to maximize the military utilization their sizeable reserves of manpower.

We really are inefficient in use of our population space.

The worlds population could fit in New Zealand if everywhere was as dense as Manhattan. Surely a country the size of Germany could fit a large population.

They had a booming population. It was actually kind of a problem for them. They were like modern China, on a smaller scale. Industrialization coupled with better, scientific healthcare methods and improved nutrition, along with becoming a unified country instead of 100 little kingdoms unleashed a wave of population. If the wars hadn't killed so many young men it's interesting to ponder what crises they may have faced given their population growth pre-WWI. A lot more immigration to America, but possibly also famine and unrest/revolution. They probably needed more arable land to feed their people and living space and may have started a different war anyway just to get at the breadbasket plains of the Ukraine.

Fit, but not feed. If Central Park were a farm it couldn't feed Manhattan.

Some perspective.

Germany 1914: 68 million people
Russia 1914: 166 million people
USA 1914: 92 million

Germany 1939: 80 million
Russia (USSR) 1939: 169 million (note that their population only went up 3 mil between the wars)
USA 1939: 132 million

Crazy that the German pop went up 12 mil after a world war and massive depression.
