didn't even give it a finishing shot. It probably laid there for a day or so before dying from those handgun rounds.

I've taken on many angry cattle with a four-wheeler and have always been able to either deter them or escape. No reason to wound the animal and leave it. If you're going to shoot, finish the job and salvage the animal.

I didn't see a path to go around, but I think the situation could have been prevented. I wouldn't have made noises like that with the moose a considerable distance away. It seemed like his behavior challenged the moose. I would have waited to see if the moose would just walk away.
