How to fix my son's tennis shoe?

So my son has a pair of these and they are only about 3 weeks old. Somehow he ended up getting a cut or tear on the top part of one of the shoes over where the toes are. It's very thin material and the spot the tear is on is only holding together by a few threads.
I went to WalMart to see what I could get to try to fix it and spent $7 on some kind of liquid tear sealent in the fabric section which didn't work. The only thing I can think of is to iron on a blue patch there which would look somewhat silly.
Any ideas?

Also, if the store won't handle, I think Nike is pretty good about returns.

You cheap bastard! You're going to make your son walk around in a pair of shoes with a huge gash in them? What kind of demented f*ck are you?
Buy the kid a new pair of shoes!!!

Buy him new shoes and make him work off some of it for not taking care of his shite - folding clothes, dishes, cutting grass, etc.

I don't have a receipt or a box anymore so I'm guessing that returns either to Academy or Nike isn't going to work. And I'm not letting him walk around with shoes with a hole in it since that would make the hole (which is about 3/4 of an inch long maybe even bigger) so I sent him to school barefoot.
Plus the gunk I got at WalMart left nasty white smear marks on it.

Are you telling me you don't have proof of purchase? Or your debit card or a copy of a cancelled check? Did you pay cash? I have returned stuff at Academy using the item and my debit card. They just looked up my transaction. They've done it at other retailers as well.
But let's leave that alone for a minute...WTF can't you just buy a new pair of shoes? If you can't, then it's time to re-evaluate buying shoes for kids you can't afford to easily replace. Just being real with you chief. It's time to either have the kid work for the next pair or lower his expectations until you can afford the next pair.

The way those shoes are designed, any tear is going to ruin the shoe with a quickness.
Either bring them back to the store or call Nike.

Go buy a new pair of the exact same shoe. Keep your receipt and box. Put the messed up pair in the new box. Bring the receipt and shoes back to the store and tell them they are defective and you want your money back.
