So my lawn looks like shite and I have a party for my girls birthday in a month and need to get it looking great. Is it as simple as weed and feed and water or should I be doing something different?

Grass is old news and more with than it's worth. Pull it up and place gravel, it's easier on the knees and the eyes.

Don't worry about it. It is not that big of a deal.

I doubt you'll see a "major" difference in a month with weed and feed.... I'm at just about 30 days after my first application and I see improvement but will still be throwing down another round to get it right.

Just noticed your name, I'll assume CE stands for Civil Engineer. Have you considered a crowned asphalt paving? Too much rain? No problem, drains right into the chump neighbor's yard. You know, the jackass with the grass.

Several things you could do that would help:
- an old school wire rake will essentially thatch the old grass clippings stuck on the ground that block that dirt.
- a little weed and feed goes a good way and it is cheap. it will help get rid of the stickers and/or clovers mixed in there.
- get some good seed even if it is a small bag from lowes. i have had really good luck with the bermuda seed they have that is coated to hold a bit more water.
- You could scrounge up a little rye grass and throw it out if all you are worried about is the party, it should green it out although it should be dying off soon since it is a seasonal grass more for winter and colder weather.
- a little fertilizer goes a long way and they make some that you can put on the water hose and let it soak in good.
- if the bare spots are tough dirt, get a garden weasel or something and break it up a little and mix a little top soil into it before seeding it.

- if you want to go hardcore and call it done, rent a tiller and till some of the bare areas but stick with areas that are increments of 16" and go buy you some sod and place it. Water it like hell until water is standing on it a couple times a day for a couple weeks. The reason I say till it up is so you can dig it in and blend it in easier instead of having the patch of sod sitting on top of the ground.

Seed is the easier way and will do a good job for you given time.

Get some turf builder seeds and water it well with a spriker on a timer.

Burn it. Seriously, it will put nitrogen back in the ground and kill the weeds and also get rid of the thatch. Will come back in 2-3 weeks growing green.

My grass looked way worse than that. I aerated the lawn myself then put down some weed and feed. Watered it for about an hour every day for a week after that then every 2 or 3 days after that if it didn't rain. It came in really well in about a month and after a month in a half or two months it looked nice and full and green.

Scotts has a "quick mix" seed that has worked surprisingly well for my lawn. Had random patches to fix from my dogs. LINK

that shite is SOOOOO tempting sometimes.

we just tilled our whole back yard and laid 2 pallets of sod. it sucked, but grass is doing well and taking root.

to the OP. you won't see it win a week or month scott's turf builder or a good weed and feed will be worth it down the road.
