tldr version:

Do The “4-7-8? Exercise
1. Place the tip of your tongue against the tissue ridge right above your upper front teeth. Keep it there for the remainder of the exercise.
2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound as you do so.
3. Close your mouth and inhale slowly through your nose while mentally counting to four.
4. Hold your breath for a mental count of seven.
5. Exhale completely through your mouth for a mental count of eight. Make the same whoosh sound from Step Two.
6. This concludes the first cycle. Repeat the same process three more times for a total of four renditions.

I've tried this the past couple of nights, didn't fall asleep in under a minute, but it did help.

I go for 65+ hours straight most every week. Doesn't take a sleep trick for me to fall asleep in under a minute. I can usually catch a good nap at a red light. Right now I'm coming off of two nights of "regular" five hours sleeping. From here, I'll go from 6:30 AM today until midnight or so on Saturday. I'll be "driving by Braille"--using the rumble strips to stay awake--by the time Friday gets here.

the tongue thing adds nothing. Neither does the sound. Just count to ten over and over and mentally picture the numbers, as if on a big birthday cake candle. if you mess up, don't get mad at yourself, just start over. think of nothing else. thinking of anything else=messing up. You will fall asleep if you exercise this like you do your muscles.

very simple. changed my life.

Inhale fully, pause, exhale fully, through your nose until you've conked out.

The slower the better. Works every time. All the time.

exactly. It's meditation, or at least a form or a building block of meditation. People complain about their mind racing. Everyone can control their minds at night when trying to go to sleep, but you have to be somewhat disciplined about it and not stress yourself when you "mess up."

It's brilliant. I learned from a book called "how to meditate."

It's kind of awkward to exhale through your mouth making a whoosh sound while your tongue is in the way.

Just put the movie Seabiscuit on. You'll last 30 seconds.

agree with this...basically, you have to occupy all of your brain so that you won't be thinking about anything that keeps you awake. the numbers occupy one part and the visualization of the numbers occupies the other part...

that is why the old trick of "counting sheep" works too...
