Battleship loading and firing sequence for the 16" gun. The drawing of the little guy in the suit made for frolicking is for scale.

The green thing is the shell, 16" in diameter, weighing about a ton or a ton and a half and filled with high-explosives. The yellow things are 110 lb bags of gunpowder. The gray thing that looks like a big fricking gun is a big fricking gun.

All the doors, elevators, transfers and such are to try to isolate everything so that the only place that goes boom is inside the barrel of the gun. If it does go boom somewhere else, it's designed so that the magazines don't go boom. If the magazines go boom, the bottom of the ship gets ripped out and it's a LOOOONG way to the bottom of the ocean.

2 rounds per minute per gun, if I remember right. The guns were arranged in three turrets of three guns each with each gun able to independently be aimed. So, with 9 guns firing in sequence at one target and evenly spaced out, a battleship could put a a shell on a target every three seconds or so.

Yeah, they were, but for all their badassitude, they could only say "see that thing 25 miles away? frick it and 8 other things."

Modern aircraft carriers basically can say "See that thing 600 miles away? frick everything closer. Twice." even though they don't look as badass as an Iowa class battleship firing all her main guns at once.

When I saw the first pic, I couldn't help but remember the explosion in the #2 turret on the USS Iowa ('89)and loss of life associated with it.
