Tony Seba

quote:

Seba began his career at Cisco Systems in 1993, where he predicted the internet-fueled mobile revolution at a time when most telecoms experts were warning of the impossibility of building an Internet the size of the US, let alone the world. Now he is predicting the “inevitable” disruption of the fossil fuel infrastructure.

quote:

Over the last year Seba has even been invited to share his vision with oil and gas executives in the US and Europe. “Essentially, I’m telling them you’re out of business in less than 15 years,” Seba said.

quote:

“What the skeptics don’t understand is, when disruption happens, it happens swiftly, within two decades or even two years,” Seba told me. “Just ask anyone at your favorite camera film, telegraph, or typewriter company.” Kodak, a photography giant in 2003, filed for bankruptcy in 2012, as the digital photography revolutions swept away dependence on film. We’ve seen parallel disruptions with smartphones and tablets.

quote:

“Should solar continue on its exponential trajectory, the energy infrastructure will be 100-percent solar by 2030,” Seba said. “The only reason for this not to happen is that governments will protect or subsidize conventional coal, nuclear, oil, gas generating stations—even when this means higher prices for consumers.”

Propaganda war against solar

quote:

“We are on the cusp of the largest disruption of industry and society since the first industrial revolution. Large, centralized, top-down, supplier-centric energy is on its way out. It is being replaced by modular, distributed, bottom-up, open, knowledge-based, consumer-centric energy,” said Seba. “The transition has already started and the disruption will be swift. Conventional energy sources are already obsolete or soon to be obsolete.”

Solar power is on an "exponential track" because it is tiny and governments are subsidizing it. The growth isn't sustainable until it becomes cost effective. I hope that happens and it might eventually. But to say oil and gas will be out of business in less than 15 years is absurd. This kind of magical thinking bullshite has been around for a long time and never pans out.

This guy is funny. Does he even realize just how many products use fossil fuels?

I agree. At present, I can't see how solar will replace fossil fuel in the next 15 years.

I personally see the government protecting the current energy system. The US economy is based on the petro dollar. What would replace it?

the problem with his line of thought is oil, gas and utilities are buying up solar as investments.

They probably invite him over for a good laugh

People way smarter than him are investing more money in oil and gas now than ever

Even if the US and Europe go completely solar on 15 years, we still got the lagging markets in South America, Asia, and Africa.

Solar in its current state is completely unsustainable without government intervention. So how can we trust the "exponential" growth.

the number one "market" for fossil fuels is: PAINTS, PLASTICS, AND RUBBER.

the number two "market" for fossil fuesl is:
AVIATION

oilfield will be fine.

How well would solar power work in states that don't get sunshine for more than a few hours like Alaska during certain parts of the year?

I don't have any clue about solar energy except my Citizen Eco watches never die lol

Or at night. Or during a multi-day storm, etc., etc.

There is a place for solar going forward - once it is more cost effective without subsidies - to power a camp or other remote locations where running utilities is not cost effective. Rooftop applications in the South and Southwest - if for no other reason to take the load off the grid during peak air conditioning season.

But this fantasy the left has about pristine clean solar (which, of course it isn't - nothing is) - replacing all the dirty, filthy coal plants (you know - the fuel source that raised us from, essentially medieval living conditions to the abject luxury that most in the West enjoy today) is just that - a fantasy. We've got a better chance of someone solving the technical challenges with fusion that any such "exponential" expansion of solar providing a reliable source of industrial, commercial and residential power.

This.

First, as solar grows it will be virtually impossible to maintain such growth rates simply as a matter of arithmetic. As the base number grows, the harder it is to add to it at the same rate.

Second, does he really think I'm gonna be driving one of the fricking retarded-looking solar cars in 15 years? Is he insane? The closest thing I've seen is solar-powered golf carts that are used as taxis at Folley Beach in South Carolina.

Third, does he understand that plastics are petroleum-based?

I admire his optimism, but solar ain't gonna replace quite as much as he'd like to believe.

Because demand is going up because supply is shrinking. Buy now sell big in 15-25 years

That was an argument presented to me recently anyway.
