How much stock do you put in employee reviews?

I'm looking for a new job and recently applied at a well known organization that seems to be exactly what I'd like. However, when I read the reviews on Indeed, about 90% of them were very negative. All from former employees. Do you put much stick in this or assume these are disgruntled ex employees? How many people go out of their way to leave a good review?

I wouldn't put much into them. It is rare you see people leave good reviews.

There's always some truth in them and usually recurring themes. I know one company I worked for they were pretty spot on.

Depends on the company. I worked for Reynolds & Reynolds and I can tell you the majority of the negative reviews on glassdoor.com were entirely accurate. I would take them with a grain of salt but I would try and find current employees and ask them their honest experience. Good luck to you

Plenty of negative comments come from former employees who left by choice because of the issues they report. I wouldn't dismiss them because they are from former employees, especially if there is a pattern.

Small company or individual office? A lot.

Major company? None.

I am looking at a job in the corporate offices of a major national retailer. I looked online and the current and former employee reviews were overwhelmingly positive. What would you make of that?

FYI, I just left GOV service and really don't have any experience working in the corporate world so actual replies are appreciated.

I would put more stock in positive reviews because it seems less likely that a person would bother posting a good review vs a bad review so they must be very motivated to do so.

Depends on the content of the review.

You can tell when one is sincere.

Fast food workers are notoriously disgruntled.

Because current employees will refrain from sharing their honest opinion out of fear of losing their job. Use some common sense.

I don't put a ton of stock in it, however pay attention to what is said. If you see a reoccurring theme, you can bet the house it's accurate unless significant changes have been made within the company.

The last place I worked for had a negative review on indeed. When it came up, it spread through the office like wildfire. Whoever posted it was 100% spot on with their review and everyone internally agreed, however none of them would make a comment out of fear of someone finding out.

There were some recurring themes, but there were no reviews whatsoever from the New Orleans office. Just other places around the country. Some recurring, others not. But, the negative comments were pretty consistent regardless of region.

I would develop good, well thought out questions based on those consistencies and extract the information you seek.

I agree with this. I would like to lambaste my current company for their many things, but I would be terrified someone would find out. And as much as I hate it here and want to get away, I'm not away yet.

I would assume they're mad ex employees who are telling their version of the truth. However rarely do they reflect the actual organization or perhaps even the silo you'd be working in. There might just be one terrible middle manager over some random billing area that runs their division like a Nazi concentration camp while 25 feet away people are working flex time and loving life.

I've read the glassdoor.com reviews on our company and many of them were 100% true based on my experience. However they were a reflection of the area of the company in question and not the organization.
