Or a combination of your cards.

I'm at about a 1,000 a month between my visa and discover. Pay off every month.

ETA: and how often do you carry a balance.

Everything that can be paid by CC goes on the Amex.

Everything. Except what I can't. Mortgage, truck, and student loans are the only things that don't go on credit card(s)

Older folks realize this, the young ones not so much. I don't even have an ATM card and only one credit card.

I wonder how the card companies make money off these rewards.

I carry no balance, but it varies between $1,000-$2,000 per month. I have a United Airlines Visa and I've just ordered a Discover It card.

Until that one month you think to yourself "I will just pay the minimum this month instead of the full balance"

I occasionally use my AMEX because you HAVE to pay it off every month. No way would I use a card that would let me carry a balance just for the fear of falling into their trap. Did that in college when I didn't know better and learned an expensive lesson.

Never. Put everything I can on ours to maximize miles etc. Pay off every month.
