How much is too much to have a dead tree cut down and removed?

I have a dead tree in between my house and the neighbor's house...about 45 feet high and has a widowmaker hanging. Company wants $800 to take it down remove it (stump would stay).
Should I keep shopping?

Always get more than 1 price but 800 doesn't sound terrible.

Sounds about right to me but I havn't had one removed in over 10 years.

Yeah, I guess it shocked me because I have a dead oak tree further back that is a little taller that I also had quoted by the same company at almost $500. It probably has to do with the methods and the fact that they have to cut down the more expensive one with more care due to the proximity to the houses.

That price is about right for it being in close proximity to houses. You could get a better deal if it were out of reach of the houses or if you were doing several trees instead of just one.

do check their bonding before you sign up. if it's over a power line or house you want to make sure they can cover it.

That's about right. You could maybe get it done for 700 if you shopped around enough.

2 CAJUNS WITH SAW & PICKUP $400

Wouldn't homeowners insurance help cover some of the cost if it is liable to damage the house?

exactly what i did, but it was 2 mexicans.
they showed up with a 30ft ladder they leaned against the tree.
(tree is on a very steep hill and impossible to get to with a vehicle)
one climbed up and attached ratchet cabling.
they split at 45 degree angles on both sides of the tree up the hill with the cable (so the tree wouldn't naturally fall down the hill and right into my pool) and tightened the cables against trees further up/back with the tree in question having the cable attached 30 or so ft up.
they hit it with a chainsaw and it fell partially on another tree.
then both of them went up the hill and started tightening the ratchets until they freed it from the tree it was leaning against and fell to the ground.

Jesus.
I wish I could just cut it down myself. I guess I could, I just would be afraid of hurting myself.

Thats average and fair.
Same price in Virginia.
but if its only 45 feet tall cut it yourself

Tree cutting prices are always twice as high as they should be....no exceptions. I did it for a while at regular people prices, and had to turn people down all of the time because we were backed up so bad

Nope. But they'll pay up to the policy limit if wind blows it over and destroys the house.

Nope, and if they get wind that you knew it was a danger they will not cover damage if it fall over.
