College tuition cost has increased at a rate of over 2 and a half times the rate of the cost of living increase. Has the education received gotten any better?

Nope. But that is what happens when you make people think that EVERYONE HAS to go to college.

That's what happens when you make it easy to get money for college through loans.

That and a bunch of people that can't pay them back

Yeah but it was super easy to get student loans back when we were in college as well. And tuition wasn't expensive.

You know what else was super easy to get as a college kid back then...credit cards. How many tables did VISA and MasterCard have set up before LSU games offering free gameday shirts if you signed up for a credit card? Hell I got my first credit card while I was still in HS

College tuition didn't get out of hand until the early to mid 2000s. It has just about everything to do with student loans and federal/state grants.

The more money that was thrown at the rising cost, the faster the cost rose. College demand is in a huge bubble that needs to pop in order to bring it back in line.

Going to college, owning a home, making more than $15/hr, etc. are luxuries, not necessities. If you enact laws and regulations that try to prove otherwise, it will bite you in the arse in the long term. The quicker people understand that, the better off this state/country would be.

First semester was NLU (now known as ULM) 1995. They paid me $250 after all tuition, room, board, & books were paid for. That part was nice, but the school sucked. It was like high school 2.0 so I transferred to LSU for Spring 1996.

Several early semesters at LSU were $1313 for 15 hours. IDK if that was before or after my grants were applied tho. Sallie Mae covered the rest. I still pay that bitch monthly, but now it's mine and the mister's tab consolidated, and the interest is like 2.6% so I can't complain too badly. Every year at tax time I suggest we pay it off but he insists it's a good debt

It always makes me happy when I read of people my age still paying off student loans(like I am)

I was STUPID with money in my 20s and ran up way too much credit card debt. Must have deferred my loans half a dozen times. Otherwise they would have been paid off by now.

You and me both.

Grad from LSU 2000 with Shaq.

Wifey grad in 2003 and I worked summers to pay for tuition and books. Watched buddies buy guitars and amps whilst I wrote checks to LSU.

JBE is a fear mongering idiot. TOPS needs to stay with cutting other programs(i.e. Freebies to those that dont work and are able)

I'm not sure if this was the case everywhere, but when I was in school, once you were full-time (12 hours) it didn't cost a single penny more to take up to 21 hours.

My last semester I took 21 hours on just Tuesdays and Thursdays. Went to school from 9-1:20 each day, had a 3 hour night class on Tuesday, a 3 hour afternoon class on Thursday (1:30-4:30) and then a Thursday night class for 3 hours.

I loved that schedule.

I wanna say that tuition alone was $279 a semester in 1979 and by the time I finished in 1985 about $1,200 a semester.

I don't remember what dorms cost.
