Boy did you hammer the nail head with this one. My cousin's wife does this for her daughters. Which, in a normal world, would be fine. But she goes the extra obnoxious length to post DAILY UPDATES of the elves with descriptions on facebook. Makes me shake my head every time.

We are doing it for the first time this year, and my 6 year old loves it. It's motivation to get her up in the morning, because she loves to go find the elf. It's fun and my parents do follow on Facebook.

Lol, I was at some friends' house last year, and their little girl said something that reminds me of some posts in this thread. She went to her dad, genuinely confused about the whole idea of Santa. I overheard her ask him, "So Santa waits until it's night time, then breaks into your house, and watches you sleep?" His response including laughing and, "yeah, but with presents"

fricking kids, what you gonna do?

If you are going to use make believe stories, might as well go with Santa and an elf

We do it, mostly by hiding it, it is no big deal. Our Elf is a bad elf, he is always getting into shite. The other toys are getting tired of his shite.

This is what I found when I woke this morning

re: How many people are doing elf on a shelf for their child/children??
quote:

Posted by loopback First year doing it for my 4 year old and he loves it, we read the book and I move the elf nightly. Don't really use it as a discipline tool. Those who don't understand it, or refuse to do it are short-changing their kids on some of the magic of Christmas, my son loves waking up and seeing where the elf has "landed". And telling the elf that he made a "happy plate" or what he wants Santa to bring for Christmas. He absolutely is enchanted with the elf and the joy of Christmas.

I refuse to do it, and I don't think I'm short changing my kids at all. To me, it represents what I hate about Christmas ( and society to be broader). The commercialization, the expectation to have/do something for the simple fact everyone else does/is, and the social obligations. I prefer a simpler life and am raising my kids to appreciate that. In no way do I think that makes me a bad parent. We have our own traditions that actually mean something to us and us alone. That matters to me. When I think back on Christmases when I was a kid, my favorite memories have nothing to do with any commercial product or social obligation. Its the simple felt angel with the gold pipe cleaner halo that went on top of our tree, making out ornaments, and waking up super early on Christmas morning and sitting outside my parents bedroom door with my brothers and a watch (we couldn't wake them up until 6:00 AM) counting down the seconds until we could go in. Never had an elf or anything else that everyone else had/did (because it was a more individual celebration back then) and my memories are very, very happy.

We don't do "elf on the shelf."

We do "Midge in the fridge."

We dont do it. The boy is scared the elf will tell Santa all the bad shite he does. He's already worried about getting onions and he doesn't want that elf making it worse.

Onions is a new one! I like that. Mine get sticks. Only my Yankee friends ever got coal. Everyone I know down here got something different.

Yet you copy the tree, the gifts, etc.

Isn't the"magic" the thing we want our kids to embrace. and a 5 buck doll that flys to the North Pole every night is all it is to a child until they are older, then hopefully they have some fun with the little ones around the family too. Not too sure there is anything to hate .

The tree and gifts have been around for hundreds of years. The book was written in 2005. I want my kids to appreciate the reason we celebrate Christmas and yes the magic, too. But, I don't need an elf to create that magic. And I think the book/elf is more around $30. That's not about magic. That's greed. So, no thank you.

The elf thing by itself isn't my thing, but not terrible on surface

It is the lame attention-whoring parents with this crap that ruin it and would push me away from being associated with the elf thing

Lame parents make elf lame

You're overthinking this dude. We have one, its fun for the kids. I dont say anything about 'you wont get presents if you're bad' I didnt even know people used the elf as a discipline tool.

Anyway, there's some funny shite you can do. IE --> one day we sat the elf down with a kids' book and surrounded him with their stuffed animals so it looked like he was reading to the animals. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW so fricking cute !!!!!!!!!

We do it, the first thing my 3 year old wants to know in the morning is where Batman Elf is(that's what he named him). I really don't overthink shite like lots of people on here do, if it makes my kid happy then I'll do it
