Don't need one. Not a coward or a wimp. Got guns in my sleeves

Some of you may remember "Buck" Morris and his repair shop under the Perkins Road Overpass, now Chelsea's Cafe. I was there when a lady outside Bet-R Grocery across the street yelled for help. We saw a small boy running with her purse. Buck was a mountain of a man, several inches over 6 feet, around 300lbs., neither coward nor wimp. He threw down his tools, said something like "I've had enough", jumped in his van to help the lady and pursued the boy who was now heading back over Perkins. Buck caught up with the boy on St. Rose near Reymond Ave. Buck got out to chase the kid, the boy turned, and from at least 40 feet away fired a single shot from a little .22 caliber pistol... on most days a .22 may not even kill a cat but fate had the tiny bullet hit Buck directly in his heart... he was probably dead when he hit the ground. Buck had a wife and young children. The boy, probably under 70 lbs. then, got juvenile life and was released at 18 y.o. ...after killing a man and destroying a family. Just don't make the mistake of having false sense of security believing your muscles and bravery can always protect others, or even yourself.

I currently decline to own, although I've owned previously and have no problem with it at all.

The reason I decline is that I live in a high-rise condo with metal front doors on my unit. We have 24 hour security and the building is literally one block away from Arlington County Police HQ. Oh, and did I mention that the county averages one homicide per year?

So I don't have one b/c I just have no need for one.

That said, having lived here for awhile I now finally understand why some people are skittish about guns. Seriously, there's just no need for one here and if you see someone armed you have to wonder why. Of course, most people here never lived in a place like NBR and have no concept of it.

Yes he's correct in my opinion at least. Shotgun with high brass sixes is a good man stopper without worry over going through walls and possibly hurting innocents.

I would probably carry one in my car, but I don't own one. We lost the family guns in Katrina, and I haven't gotten one since.

I love guns, but I don't own one. I would be too eager to use it. I've had several situations where I could have used it and would have been wrong. I'm just safer without. I live in a very small town and kind of in the country, so way different than when I was in BR..

If you see me anywhere other than work or church, mine is within inches of my right hand. Same goes for my wife(except hers is in her purse at work). And yes, I pray regularly that neither of us ever get put in that life or death situation.

Great post and exactly what I feel should be the focus for all public awareness. I was looking to find what ages kids were started in classes. A couple of mine are still young. I already started my youngest boy handling / shooting with BB's. My very youngest is only 10 but would like to start her in classes. Has anyone had a girl this young shooting?

...and times when my Dad was teaching me to shoot are some of the most vivid and complete memories as a kid. I'll never forget his demeanor change to stern and his dead serious eye contact as he explained why we must gives guns the utmost respect for our own good.

My dad worked for the city and brought all of our guns for him and a few coworkers to use to protect themselves. They all went missing after that. The stories he has from that still give me chills.

See my post sbove. Other than the difficulty in finding ammo, I love my bulldog.

I've had mine since 1990, bought it at the Centroplex Gun Show, so sweet. I cant tell how many times I've been offered trades/sales.

Well aware of S&W's 15-22 Sport since introduced. I priced them last week for this Christmas. My boy asked for a .22... my Dad gave me a Marlin 39 Carbine .22 for Christmas when I was 8. At 12 he's ready for the responsibility of a .22. The 15-22 is a high for a .22 but it looks like lots of fun. The AR look would scare the crap out a lot of people for that matter. And WTF... Obama hold over?

Have guns. Keep them all unloaded and hidden/locked away from the kids, with the exception of one that is kept above a book case that only I can reach and my bedroom .45 that they cannot rack the slide on (CZ clone, very little grip area and a stiff action). I carry a .357 in my car on occasion. Have been contemplating getting a permit, but I don't want the responsibility of carrying.

I have an 11 year old girl I'm ready to get into it and an 8 year old who really wants to get into it. My thinking is to start with the single shot crack-barrel pellet gun, then move to a .22 pistol. I've thought about starting them with a 6" s&w model 686 shooting light .38s, but then I wouldn't need to buy a .22 pistol, which I want for some reason.

My first pistol shooting experience was with a Hi-Power when I was 6 or 7. It hurt my hand and arm and my ears rang for days.

So you guys both love the bulldog? Been contemplating one. Is it heavy?

love my S&W 686s (got them cheap cheap), but the charter is a lot cheaper than any smith or ruger revolver.
