I think the reasons people are leaving for are more personal preferences than it is economic. And by that I mean, some people think it's more important to take less money, and live near family, and friends. The culture is a bonus to some.

For those that move, they just want a different lifestyle or a new place to start and make new friends. Maybe their family and friends in LA is not as important to them as moving to wherever and starting over.

The economy is the economy in every state, just as the education is.

It won't. But it is always the reason I come home 10-15 times per year.

I go back and forth on this one - yes, Louisiana has its share of problems and as someone who was born & raised here, it does get tempting to say the hell with it and leave.

But then I see other states having their own, different problems - some that I consider more serious than Louisiana's issues.

In the end, being near LSU sports, family and friends is enough for me to keep the other 49 states in the vacation destination-only category (for now).

I always wanted to get out and experience other states and be "cultured". Lived in Florida right after graduation and now Dallas. All I want to do now is move back home! Hate not being able to see the family and lifelong friends. Riding backroads and helping the pops with his cows. Plus I don't know many Tiger fans here.

Roads, education, and healthcare

Private schools here are great and the cheap home prices make private schools more affordable.

Roads are great here in Kenner. Usually can get any imperfection fixed in a month.

Healthcare? I only need that if I'm dying.

Considering more industrial plants are opening/open here than probably anywhere in the country I find this hard to believe. Not everyone is a business grad.

A lot more business grads than people who are planning to work in industrial plants

Maybe they should focus on getting MBA's to South Louisiana

I'm from Texas originally and have moved around a good bit since I graduated from LSU but my wife has never lived more than an hour from where she grew up in Louisiana. We are moving to North Carolina in 1 week.

We will miss LA but excited about new geography.

If road conditions are a deciding factor for you to move to another state I don't trust your decision making skills.

I don't like anywhere else. The only other place I'd consider living other than south LA would be the coast.

This is my home, and I will never leave. You couldn't pay me enough money to live somewhere else. That's how I, and most other people, think about South Louisiana

I recently took a road trip to California, and have absolutely zero desire to live anywhere between here and there.

I've lived in Oregon, California and out of the country. Now I live in Louisiana and love it. It's unique and has great people.

This is not just LA. to me. It is my homeland. Being of Acadian ancestry, most of us feel an attachment to South La. that you Americans(the old way to look at non-Cajuns), will never understand. I enjoy visiting places out-of-state, but they could never be home. I can go to the cemetery and show you the graves of my people from many generations. I know people all over LA, hunt with them and fish with them. I would always be a stranger anywhere else.

Neither am I, but the idea of working in a plant/refinery wasn't appealing as I'm sure it isn't to many others.

I never understood why people would want to work in a plant/refinery. I would take a pay cut to stay out of those mf. The restrictions are absolutely ridiculous now. You can't take a piss without needing a permit.

This may be a surprise to some people on the O-T, but some people value "friends, food, and family" more than they value additional money.

I lived in Houston for 6 years (hence my name) and came back to LA over 3 years ago. If we still lived in Houston, my wife and I would probably combined make 20K more and not have to pay 9K in tuition.

But that money would get spent somehow, probably on a bigger house, bigger vacations, visiting family in Louisiana, and paying for babysitters.

There's a value in my daughter's grandparents coming to every single one of her softball games this summer. There is a value in my mom calling at 6 pm on a Friday night and asking if she can come pick up the girls for a last minute sleepover.

My wife and I have good jobs. We make good money. We have a nice house. My kids have tons of friends - ones they made at school and in the neighborhood, and the kids of our friends. We feel a part of the community. Some things can be replicated elsewhere, other things can't.

Thankfully we both have jobs that can be done in Louisiana. That's not the case for some people. And I'll be the first to say that our entry-level market for people with college degrees is beyond abysmal. Most people have to leave after college. Many stay away, many come back.

How much you enjoy life is much more about your attitude, making the most of your situation, and sense of adventure than it is about where you live.

That said...I live in Virginia but can't wait until the kids are out of school so my wife (who's a nurse) and I can move to LA. It will be the first stop in our trek around this wonderful country of ours.

Incorrect. Why, just next door in Texas you can get a better job and send your kids to public school. Win-win.
