For the first time since probably high school, I've been pretty steady with working out or exercising. For the first time in over a year, I've gone over a week without doing anything at all. I had a couple events that I was training for a few weeks back, so I was taking it rather easy for about two weeks, then absolutely nothing for a week. So basically 3 weeks of being off the wagon with 2 races mixed in at the very beginning. I got back into it yesterday and woof, I feel like shite. I never would have imagined that I would lose so much fitness that quickly. I mean I'm still much more fit than a couch potato, but I can't come close to the pace I was keeping just a few weeks ago. I'm hoping I'm just sick or something.

Maybe it has a lot to do with eating terribly for the last week as well.

A week or so. That's it. I could work out 6 days a week for a year straight, but one week of doing nothing and it feels like I've taken 10 steps back.

For every day it takes you to get "In Shape" it takes precisely that many minutes for you to get "Out of Shape".

The struggle is real.

Cardio shape wouldn't take long to get out of sorts.

Physical shape would take a bit longer.

Fast, but if you have a good base of having exercised for a long time it comes back reasonable quick, like a few weeks. But those first few days you feel like you'll never be able to work out again.

You shouldn't lose any fitness on a week. You must have just had an off day.

My best workouts come after I'm unable to do anything for 5-6 days.

I got mono about 3 weeks ago and yesterday was the first time I've worked out since and I about died

I mean...I was still able to do everything, but it all seemed much more difficult and afterwards I was dead

I haven't tried running yet so we shall see how bad I have fallen off when I go back to running next week

I did 3 miles on what "felt" like an 8 minute pace. When I checked my watch afterwards, it was a 10 minute pace. I mean I knew I was going slower. I was purposefully "easing" back into it. But I was winded and sweating like I was going much faster.

Then I got in the pool and maybe swam half the distance I normally do and felt like I had done a full workout.

When it comes to running, they say after 3 days you start to lose it

First off, it doesn't take as much as people think to maintain cardiovascular shape.

That being said, I happen to believe the older one gets the quicker one gets out of shape.

So in answer to your question, I will give you the ever popular it depends answer. Interestingly, if you ran a race hard, well you are good for a few days. One can actually manage to not lose much but running in one race a week for a month.

Now feeling like you did before you stopped working out is a slightly different thing. I happen to think that you will feel sluggish for a few days but considering you haven't had that many days off, it shouldn't be that long getting back into shape.

The last part of the puzzle I would have to add is how active your regular life? You may not be training per se, but perhaps you played softeball a few times over that time span. Or perhaps your job involves a decent amount of walking. All these things factor in.

If you are like me, and over the age of forty with a job where people just want to keep you sitting all day, well you are going to feel like crap after a week of doing nothing.

I have not worked out in 2 weeks because of an injury and surgery and I feel fat. I can't wait to get back at it.

ETA: The funny thing is the injury and surgery are completely unrelated.

it's gradual, but i'd say 3 or so months to actually lose ground that couldn't be regained in 3 weeks.

Roughly a week. Takes about a month to get back if I'm out a week.

in 2010 I ran 6 miles a day 4-5 times a week with about an 7-8 mile run on Saturday. While doing this I would bike for an hour and swim for an hour each day. I was training for a half iron man. I did this schedule for months and it had come to the point that it was boring and effortless.

After the Half Ironman I took a month off and didn't do anything. I started running again and it was literally like I had never run in my life. It was as hard after the month off as it was when I first started.

For me, it takes a month.

2-3 weeks of no running pretty much resets my fitness, no matter what workouts I was doing before
