A friend of mine is an NFL agent. He's a lawyer and he took the NFLPA's certification test. I think it's that easy and you don't necessarily have to be a lawyer, though I think it helps during contract negotiations.

I actually just worked with an NHL player's agent. Player just signed a new deal with a $10 million bonus. Agent is early 50s and CPA by trade.

Good connections. You need really good connections. That or have an Ivy League Law degree.
