How do you "Flip the Bird" and what are the origins?

Do you just extend the middle finger, stick your thumb out, or have the fancy curled fingers (looks like a SR-71 Blackbird)?

Anyone know how the Bird originated?

I like the alien approach. All fingers hidden cept the bird. You see a long slender finger...mine.

I always thought the bird had something to do with Napoleon cutting fingers off of people (or something like that) but I could be completely wrong about that one.

I think partially right. I believe one army would cut the middle finger off of opposing archer prisoners and they would flip the bird to mock them.

ETA:
Whoops.

Erroneous

Apparently it really does mean Up yours

I always heard it had something to do with archers having their middle fingers cutoff making them unable to fire a bow.
