How do you cheer up your folks?
Posted by tigersownall on 9/15/15 at 3:02 pm00
My father's health had deteriorated in the past six months immensely. Little back ground. He is a man of large girth, but he always was a hard working summbitch. Worked for the news paper for 38 years. Kept our house and yard clean down the baseboards. He retired in 09, but that never really stopped him from much. Besides high blood pressure he never has been a sickly man. 6 months ago he thinks he has a sinus infection. Trouble breathing. They diagnose it as bronchitis, but decide to do some tests on his heart anyway. Come to find out he has an irregular heart beat. Two weeks ago he had this procedure done in which they shock it back into the correct rythem. Now ontop of that he fractured his lumberg? Vertebra. His back is in agony. He just got out of the emergency room on Sunday. I went to go see him today and it's fricking sad. I feel like all the life has been sucked away from him. He is visibly depressed about the state he is in. I don't know how to snap him out of this. I feel like it can only get worse.

write him a letter explaining your appreciation of his life and the love you have for him.
eta: in the end, its what's passed on to our kids and the legacy we live behind is the only thing that should matter to us.

Are there any drive-through national or state parks where you are? I'd imagine just getting out of the house and going for a cruise would be a nice distraction.

simple.
bring him a beer (if he drinks) or a coke or coffee or his favorite dessert.
sit next to him and tell stories of your childhood that involve both you and him (preferably funny stories)
cherish the time you have with him.
eta my dad has had several strokes and isn't coherent but if i go hang out with him and tell stories i can get him to laugh and grunt or even cry even thought he's pretty much unresponsive the rest of the time.

Dance with my mom.
There's no cheering up my old man. He's a grumpy frick.
Wait, scratch that, bring the grandbabies over.

I'm trying to encourage him and my mom to take a trip to the beach now that it's a little cooler.

Grandkids if you've made any. Otherwise, just be with him and do what he used to enjoy if possible.
Prayers.
Prayers.

Anytime that I have ever found a picture from my childhood with them in it I will give it to them with the memory and how much it meant to me written on the back of the picture.

From what you described, I would go over and clean up the yard and maybe his favorite room he sits in so he can enjoy them and not just see things that need to be done. Then take him out and just sit and visit for a few hours. But you know him best. Maybe a ride to a nearby lake or somewhere you have memories to stir up conversation?
