The guy that started Fossil created this company and started making watches selling the Detroit story. I think a few of their watches are pretty sharp.

For the youngsters who have never heard this expression.

I think they look alright, I'd wear one if someone gave it to me.

For 500-800 bucks though, I'd go buy a Christopher Ward or a lightly used Oris or something. In other words, I consider them to be aesthetically pleasing with a nice American story, but overpriced.

They're straightforward and don't draw too much attention to themselves.

I have already told tGF that I want one upon law school graduation next May.

I really like this one:

In that price range, definitely Hamilton or Tissot.

Some people have trashed Shinola by saying that it's cheap Chinese parts merely assembled in Detroit. If people want to overpay for a timepiece and it's a thriving American company, who really cares?

Give us a price range. I like Tissot for the 300-800 range, but it's not really a signature watch or anything (I have one and like it). For something like your situation I'd want as close to "heirloom" as I could get (I too got a nice watch for LS grad). I mentioned Oris because I like their designs and you can get them for as little as 900 bucks (and they're swiss autos).

Obviously there are Tags in that range but I'm not a fan. Maybe Baume and Mercier for the low 1000s. Obviously if you don't mind the used market your options will expand.

Do they want to make bikes? Or do they want to make watches? I know where folks like Tag or Citizen stand.
