How can I check to see if this vehicle is in good condition?

I've found a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder with 149k miles selling for $7k.
Of course the listing says it's in great condition, clean Carfax history, yada yada, but I'm wondering if there's a way to hire someone to check out the car before I purchase it.
I'll have $4k to put down, so I would love to find a good deal on a car but can finance something more expensive if needed.

Bring it to your mechanic(assuming you have one of course). If not then find one.

You can find mechanics online that will go out and inspect the car for you. I did this last year when purchasing a 2015 Sonata through a wholesaler--cost me $150 if I recall correctly; the mechanic went to where the car was, did a 180-point check on the car--I found it to be WELL WORTH the money spent. Excellent idea when considering a used car.

If he buys that vehicle, he'll be on a first-name basis with several.

I've used CARCHEX a couple times and have been pleased.

Of course, nobody really has a mechanic anymore. So really, you just need to learn everything you can about cars in general, then learn everything about the Pathfinder in particular, then take it to your mechanic - yourself.

You had a vehicle inspected that still had a factory warranty?

I did not know this. This is good to know.

Hopefully I can do this. I'm trying to be more frugal in my life, and outside of a mortgage payment, the car is the last bit of debt I have. Would love to only finance $3k and knock that out in a few months.
But not for a lemon and not for a vehicle that isn't going to last a while. I'm only going to be using the SUV for about ten miles a week and the occasional camping trip a few times a year.

Do you have a mechanic?

Try CARCHEX.com for starters …. but I was able to find an inspection service online here in Orlando that performed the test the day after I called. Good luck.

Some things I that I have been told to look for are:
1) The general condition of the vehicle. If it looks really nice that might not mean anything, but if it's in not so geat shape cosmetically, the owner probably wasn't great with maintenance either.
2) Look for signs of fluids leaking especially oil.
3) Check for the spare. It's a possible problem for you in the future and another possible tell about the owner's maintenance.
4) Look at tires another possible maintenance tell and something that you may have to replace.
5) Don't forget to check the obvious stuff like AC and windows.
6) Put a dollar bill on the muffler exhaust. It should just blow continuously, if it sucks and blows, that's probably a big problem in the not to distant future.

Let a mechanic give it a look over. Of course you will get charged for that service.
