And the only dog in that group that's intimidating is the German Shepherd.

Our Weim trapped an electrician in a closet once. She made a random dude coming around trying to sell mulch jump off the front porch and run out to the street. They are also incredibly racist. I think it's the German heritage.

That's true of many large breeds.

trainability

GSD>Weim>>>>>>Boxer.

Boxers are dumb. Whoever said they were smart just doesn't know relative dog intelligence/trainability.

If you're looking at those then check out an old english bulldog. It is bred to be athletic but not have the health issues of a standard english bulldog. It is 50% english with some mastiff and American bulldog. They are smart, loyal and strong. They are athletic and live to about 11 years old.

I own a boxer, and she hasn't barked in over 3 years. She's only 4.5 y/o. Nothing is intimidating about her. She must have been the runt of the litter. Very loving and good with kids, but that's about it for that particular dog.

Most of the Weims I see are just goofy and hyperactive, but that's just a lack of training and understanding the breed.

People buy dogs because they are pretty or cool-looking, when they know nothing about what the dog is for or what it needs. It's why lots of people are shitty dog owners.

If you don't have the time to train and give a German Shepherd what it needs then you're the last person that needs to own one. Not talking to you, but the OP.

You have to be right for the dog, not the other way around.

Life is not serious to a Boxer. They are like juvenile kids in their temperament. My Boxer is not dumb, she's just not an aggressive dog. My friend has a Boxer, and his dog is ready to tear through the door at the sound of the doorbell.

German Shepards and dobermans scare the bejesus out of me. The others you mentioned aren't very intimidating.

My family used to have a Weimaraner. They're very smart, but can be pretty aggressive and territorial. Good guard dogs, but they're not too good for company, small kids, or other animals.

I think it's animal cruelty to own a long haired breed in the deep south

My Boxer is calm, but does get aggressive when playing sometimes. She will only bark when strangers are outside and she can see them. She trained easy. They are by no means dumb!! All 3 I've owned were very intelligent. As for aggression/protection, she is VERY much so when it comes to my wife and son.

Weims are like GSPs, only they often have separation anxiety and GSPs don't. If you are in the market for an ultra high-energy dog that has to be exercised a lot and still acts hyper, you'd be better off getting a GSP as they look and act the same with the exception of coat color and GSPs are fine being left alone whereas Weims go absolutely insane from anxiety.

It's not a coincidence that so many various law-enforcement and/or military utilize German Sheperds, or their cousins the Belgian Tervuren/Belgian Malinois.

I've read, for decades, that these three are some of the most eminently trainable and intelligent dogs.

Had a Tervuren (Belgian Shepherd Dog) as a kid. Great dogs super smart and very protective of their "flock".

I have owned a boxer before, and experienced nothing but good from him

I've been around boxers. Although most are "bolters" they are otherwise good and trainable dogs. Their personalities might be a little too sweet to be counted on in a real crisis. But, I think pretty smart dogs.

GSD - I had a great one for 13 years. Really smart dogs, but can be stubborn. If you get a good training program on, I can't imagine a more hardworking or capable breed. And their protective instincts are top notch.

I have no experience with Weimaraner.

Another breed to consider is Doberman.
