To be fair, pretty much all of these schools are in the same general part of Houston and have been failing for many years.

What's shocking to me is that the small-government Republicans in Austin have allowed an entire ISD to be taken over if only one school is failing.

By all means... if a school fails for that many years, take it over, or shut it down. But to take over an entire system because of one school is big-government central planning that only a socialist can be proud of.

I doubt TEA ever takes over HISD, but the fact that they could is stunning.

The quality of the schools are almost always a direct reflection of the quality of parenting. Money can help, but it's often an issue of life decisions by adults affecting kiddos' performance at school and in the real world.

small-government Republicans

They are threatening Dallas too. Its part of the Republican goal of allowing private corporations to get their hands in the till of taxpayer funded education through curriculum development, standardized testing and charter schools. Republican "small government philosophy" has been Trumped by ideology and big lobbyist money.

Yes. Reagan High School was renamed Heights High School. Also Dowling Street has been renamed Emancipation Boulevard through the 3rd Ward and East Downtown areas. The sign also indicates it as an "Economic Corridor"

Completely agree about parenting.

The problem is, the schools with the worst parenting also tend to have the worst teachers and the worst principals and no one - not the kids, not the parents, not the teachers, not the admins - actually give a crap.

The flip side is also too - the best schools have everyone clued in and working together.

The charter schools in NOLA are starting to have some success because some of them provide teachers and admins that actually do give a crap. And some parents and students are starting to take notice and are actually starting to care as well.
