Planning a trip around Christmas and trying to pick a hotel. How is it staying in the financial district? My buddy swears by it because it is a lot cheaper. How long does it take in a cab or subway to get from the financial district up to mid Manhattan?

If I want to get closer to times square/central park some hotels are double the cost.

What area is the best for the money?

Any advice is appreciated.

Not long enough to matter

Would you rather me say New York and then you guessed which part of the state I was staying in? Thanks for your worthless input

You are asking for travel advice on the OT though. If you want all serious answers go post this on tripadvisor.

AirBnB is your friend. You're welcome.

I don't know what the pricing is like in the financial district, but it's a relatively short ride up to Times Square.

Visited NYC 2 years ago.

We used Vaction Rentals by Owner to rent a small 1BR apartment on the Upper East Side. It was a great experience. The apt was close to astop on the 6 express subway line. From there we were at any point in Manhattan within 10-15mins

That's because for the most part the Financial District is pretty deserted after nightfall. If you are doing the theater, museum, dining thing most of your spots you hit up will be more towards mid town/flatiron district.

I stayed at The Library a block away from the New York Public Library and a few blocks from Grand Central. We liked it a lot and will stay there or Flatiron District for our next trip.

I stayed at the Conrad downtown a few years ago during the New Year holiday. Getting around was easy using both cabs and the subway.

I've stayed at several Hilton properties. The Conrad mentioned, the Doubletree on Lexington and I believe 50th, and the Hilton on 42nd and 2nd (again, not exactly sure, but it was by the UN) were all the best. These two are more midtown east with a lot of stuff going on near by, but that will be true for almost any hotel in Manhattan.

FiDi is ok but it is usually dead at night and on the weekend. The South Street Seaport is starting to build up and there are some decent places to eat around there. There is also a small ice skating rink in that area. Subways are really easy. Walk to the Fulton Street station and you can catch the express trains east (green line) or west (red line). The blue line also stops at Fulton.

ETA: I have lived in the FiDi and Battery Park. Currently, live on the Upper East. Let me know if you have any questions about any of those areas.

Conrad is in Battery Park and is a solid hotel.

I stayed at the times square hotel, on west 56 I think, a couple years ago. Room was small but well appointed and the location was great. Walking distance to time square (duh) and phantom of the opera. We took a taxi or the subway everywhere else. $ 130 a night. Did I mention the room was small?? But we weren't there to stay in the motel so it didn't matter.

That's right, can't keep track of all the neighborhoods. I just call everything south of Canal "downtown."
