Hot water heater not staying hot

So, the hot water heater is not staying hot for as long as it used to. It's 40 Gallons so it has always lost its heat after awhile, but lately it bas been bad. It does get hot, but it doesn't stay hot for more than a few minutes. It doesn't even stay hot enough to fill up the bath tub with hot water.
Anybody know what the deal might be with this?
ETA: It's gas

There are usually two coils. One is probably out.

Maybe the hot water that its trying to heat is too hot, therefore it is acting more like a hot water cooler.

Just to get a clear understanding, it makes hot water to the temp you want but it just runs out quickly, is that correct?

Never fooled with a gas heater, but I've changed the elements on my electric one. It's not very difficult.

Go tankless.Depending on the size of your home it shouldn't be that expensive, I plan on making the switch myself. Just have to make the time to install it.

Yes that's right

Spend the extra money and get a tankless. Never run out of hot water. Highly recommend.

Could be a thermostat issue, or a vent issue, or a dip tube issue. There's lots of information out there on each of these issues. You can either try to figure it out and repair it yourself, call a professional, or replace the water heater.
