I have a 75-lb. lab-weimaraner mix and a 60-lb. shepherd-husky mix who bark their heads off when a stranger approaches our home. It's enough to scare any would-be intruder away from our place; not even the craziest person is gonna take a chance that maybe he won't get ripped to shreds by the beasts he hears behind our doors.

Under these circumstances I've never felt the need for guns or an alarm system or anything.

If you have dogs, do they serve to deter intruders away from your place? Or are they too quiet or laid back or whatever to scare bad guys off?

No such thing as a "laid back" dog when someone is trying to break into your home. Any dog is better than no dog. Not to mention, studies indicate that having a dog lowers blood pressure.

Dogs are better than an alarm system at alerting you but once SHFT nothing beats a shotgun loaded with buckshot.

Dogs wouldn't stand much of a chance if the intruder was armed...

I have a 78 pound Black GSD. She is a sweet dog but her bark will make anyone shite themselves. I also have plenty of guns. Also, get an alarm system.
I will say, black people seem terrified of my dog, I have no clue if it is a genetic thing. Black UPS dudes refuse to get out of the truck until she is in the house even though she loves people and will lick you to death.

They probably will not make it in. A good dog is a deterrent.

As I wrote, I don't feel any need for them. My two dogs do an excellent job of deterring intruders from trying to get into my home.

Dogs are the #1 defense system. They naturally hear uncommon noise and their bark scares a lot of people away. It also gives people the time to load a gun to shoot the intruder.

So you know that people try and break in and yet you still don't have a gun or an alarm? You are some kind of stupid.

Agreed. But if someone was determined to get into your house for whatever reason, dogs can't do much as an actual defense weapon

That's my belief. The last thing a robber wants is to have to confront and shoot two presumably large, wild dogs--in a dark house--before even getting down to the business of robbery. It's not worth the risk and effort, so the intruder is going to back off and look for an easier place to rob.

Yeah I've got a dog. Just got it this evening in fact... A Charter Arms .44 Bulldog. It goes were I go.

This is the difference between watch dogs and guard dogs.

True, but they are a damn good first line and a great deterrent.

I was staying in a questionable part of town when I went south a few years ago, and when the hood rats found out I had a GSD, they would cross the street instead of walking closer to the house.

We keep one posted in the back yard every night, the Great Dane sleeps at the foot of the bed, and a little 20 lb. Mutt roams the upstairs with the kids.

We have a house alarm, too.

I think
