so i just called to make a payment on a couple of visits my son made to the kroger clinic and because i told them i was his dad and he's 19, they refused to let me pay because i couldn't tell them what the total amount owed was even thought he's on my insurance.

so i hung up, called right back and this time told them i was my son and they took my payment.

wow, much secure so safe.

I didn't know HIPAA prevented the release of financial data.

They just want to make sure you aren't a spying parent trying to find out if your son had an abortion.

Had a similar experience with a hospital in Utah. My son had fractured a wrist snowboarding and when the bill came I called to ask about some of the charges and got the same BS. I did what you did and they gladly discussed the billing and we corrected an error they had made. I understand not discussing the treatment and medical info since they are technically adults at 18 but when I'm the responsible party for payment they should be able to discuss that.

HIPAA is a royal pain in the arse.

I understand the lady not letting you pay for your son. The fines for a HIPAA violation are no joke

HIPAA can be a pain, and the penalties are harsh. However, HIPAA would not prohibit the billing office talking.to you about your son's bill if you are the responsible party. This is more likely the result of an employee who has been overtrained in terms of scaring her against violating HIPAA and undertrained in terms of what is actually allowed.

I don't think that's breaking a HIPPA rule. That's just a dumb employee. As you stated, they wouldn't be disclosing protected information because you already have access to it if your son is on your plan.

You said HIPAA, not HIPPA. Have an upvote just for that.
