I don't know about y'all but when I graduated high school I really had no idea what I wanted to be and they just told me to pick a major when I went to college. And since then I'm realizing that I have applied to jobs and positions that I had no idea even existed at that ripe young age of 17.

Being that so many people don't really know what they want to be outside of saying I want to be a doctor or a nurse or a lawyer or an engineer shouldn't there be a little College Preparatory High School course curriculum that gives these youngsters a wide array of professions that they've never even thought of with job salaries Outlook and that kind of stuff and maybe they will be less directed into liberal arts majors?

And its probably even more important for those not going to college. To see some different trade options available.

We have magnet schools that specialize in certain professions. Plus we offer all kinds of elective courses like engineering, computers, health sciences, law enforcement, construction, culinary arts, early childcare and several others. If you went to a small high school you probably had fewer options.

Most high school guidance counselors can do a much better job of presenting options to students. Career Days at schools also help. Other than that, most kids only know about what their parents, neighbors, and parents of friends do for a living, and that's going to be a fairly narrow circle.

You don't really figure life out until you're at least 25, so it would be a waste IMHO

I agree; most kids going into college choose either engineering or premed because that's all they know or that's what they were spoon fed. Hell, most careers you don't even know exist until you are actually in the profession or studying it.

Edit: also we need to teach kids there's no shame in any profession. The world needs carpenters, plumbers and garbage men too. Theres no shame in hard work.

I went to a pretty nice high school, and I wish they had a class like what you're describing. Like a basic financials and trades/exploring different career paths class would've been nice. I was so freaked out by blood back then I didn't think I'd ever want to be in healthcare. Lo and behold I am now.

If you become certified or master in a trade relatively early, you can make some serious change and not work that much

Not a big deal.

Quit worrying. Soon the fed will give you a common core aptitude test in the the 4th grade and your occupational course will be locked in.

I try to spend a little extra time on this topic in my class. I teach physical science so we cover physics and chemistry. Things I like to show are jobs available, and what it takes to become it. I also ask the kids what 2 jobs they think they'll like. Then I give them positive ideas on how to reach it. I never tell the kid that is just average at math to give up on being an engineer, but I do tell him to learn to love math and enjoy the challenges of difficult classes. It's a topic that is needed with kids in HS.

St Pauls has this now, I assume others do as well. It's not every profession but they have a business or engineering or couple other curriculums you choose.
