Ok, here's the story. We were planning a vacation to Costa Rica in June but my family is worried about the Zika virus. So, we're thinking about going to Hawaii instead.

What are some good, non touristy, semi laid back, semi adventure Hawaii vacation ideas?

It'll be me, wife, 17 year old son and 6 year old daughter. Also, my parents and maybe my sister are going too.

No pics, so don't ask.

TIA

Is someone going to be pregnant on this trip or what?

I thought it basically didn't matter if that wasn't the case.

ETA: Zika will probably be here in the US awaiting your return anyways.

If you dive, go to the big island and do a night dive with the giant manta rays. Buy the video they will make of your dive.

That is quite an age gap.

Spend most of your time in Maui , you have options from mountains to beaches and a lot more. Make sure you save at least a half a day for Pearl Harbor

I'll continue to Kauai train. Hit up Hanalei bay, Limahuli gardens and Secrets beach.

Haven't been to Kauai, but I hear it's less busy. But Maui is amazing.

Things I'd recommend to do there:

Haleakala (volcano - bus up and ride bikes down)
Road to Hana (takes all day)
Big Mama's Fish House (expensive)
Old Lahaina Luau (if you've never done a luau)
Makena Beach

Did all of this. We also took a trip along the western portion of the island. Road is single lane and a few spots were hairy when you faced on coming traffic. Stopped off at a local shop and bought some art. Very relaxing. Would live in Hawaii if the family would move.

North shore Princeville area is very nice. I highly recommend Kauai Backcountry for zip lining

And you and the wife are both putative biological parents to both of these children?

Hmmmmm?

DNA test is called for here.

The Big Island is good for kids, more space, Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea.

You can rent a house for a week on Kauai and it will be exactly what you are asking for. Also, go buy your liquor and food at Costco instead of getting raped at the grocery store.

If you are going to Oahu, I have a ton of stuff to do since I lived in the armpit of Hawaii for three years.

If you go to Maui these are a must:
Call these guys for diving/snorkeling LINK

They will put you in the best spot to see everything.

Mama’s Fish House is a must but get there early to see the sunset.

We stayed here LINK and it was awesome!

Look for cookies from the Maui Cookie lady.

If you want laid back, the only island to consider is Kauai.

I recommend Holo holo charters for a boat ride along the Napali Coast

Eta since you're staying in Kappa there is a foodland there that sells several different kinds of awesome poke
