Having surgery while awake

I've done this once before, for removing a pilonidal cyst. They gave me a spinal block, so I was pain-free. I could still feel lots of tugging away at the site, and asked someone for a mirror so I could see. It was actually kinda interesting watching myself being operated on for awhile before I got bored.
Post-op recovery was a breeze. Like the article said, no IV drip (which by itself made the whole thing worth it) and I was out the door pretty quickly. Would do it again.
What say you?
ETA: I also had my wisdom teeth removed this way but not sure that counts. Basically the oral surgeon wiggled them out with dental pliers, I could even hear the cracking. More unsettling than the cyst procedure actually.

I had it done to remove some kind of cyst in my leg when I was in high school.
I didn't watch, but I remember my iPod dying like five minutes in and so I didn't have shite to take my mind off of it. The tugging was extremely weird knowing that they're pulling and cutting, but feeling no pain.

I had a pretty brutal oral surgery and asked to stay awake as I didn't like the idea of being under anesthesia. I was so numbed and fricked up it wasn't bad at all

The irony of The New York Times is that the people it's most biased against (doctors, businessmen, whites, men, the rich) are the people who are most likely to buy a subscription.

Anything over LASIK sounds awful. Don't see why anyone would want to be awake for anything over eye surgery.

I have a cyst or something in my arm the size of a marble i've had for years. Its just near the skin and im going to get it out soon. I'd do it myself if the Dr. would just guide me.
I'd love to see a surgery on myself like that.

I was having some screws put in my finger and woke up for a good few minutes before they noticed. I couldn't talk or move and I had to wait until one of them saw that my eyes were open. Freaking awful.

I'd avoid anesthesia if at all possible, just to avoid the withdrawal symptoms.

Surgeons woke my dad up during his second brain surgery to language map. It gives me the chills to think about.

Hey, if you think those are bad, there are some brain surgeries/brain tumor removals that require that the patient stay awake.
