So today I was called by a company I interviewed for offering a job with a pretty nice pay. Yesterday I was offered a summer internship as an engineer. The internship will be about the same pay, but may be less. I've never really had to choose between two different jobs because I'm just a college student. Any advice?

Even if the pay is less? Should I ask for more to match the other job offer?

i mean if you are an engineering major, probably go with the slightly less money and better experience.

If you get the same experience then go for the better pay.

whats the first job?

if you are going to stay in school and get the engineering degree the internship is much better.

if you are done with school and are willing to pass up EVER finishing your degree, the job.

If you want advise, do the internship, and finish the degree.
If you keep your nose clean and do the internship well, you will get an offer AND you get to finish your degree. the degree is worth millions.
An Engineering degree is worth millions.
MILLIONS.

If the internship pay is close at all, and the other job is just a job, you obviously take the internship.

you need good experience right now more than money, take the one that will position you better when you graduate

I asked Les Miles, he said to run the option since it's worked so well for him.

I will probably end up taking the internship. I don't even know the pay of it yet, only what I've heard from others.

The summer internship is less pay because you haven't leveraged yourself. Call them back and tell them you got another job offer and see how much they're willing to go up. Companies always lowball their first offer.

If the internship has been officially offered to you, there is nothing wrong asking about the compensation. They should have addressed it before offering you the position. And if they didn't, it is your responsibility to ask. Many internships are pennies for pay, and some are even no compensation at all. You don't want to accept it and then find out it isn't good pay at all.

That said, if you can afford it even if it isn't good pay, the experience is much more important if you are staying in school.

I worked "a job" in college waiting tables and bartending, and I made tons of cash. But that wasn't until I completed 2 full years worth at an internship that only ended due to state budget cuts. Had I not gotten that experience, I would have continued searching for an internship to help when graduation came. On one hand, working in customer service can help you network and meet lots of people (I had a stack of business cards from regulars from the bar who were willing to help me with the job search once I graduated), but on the other hand, experience is so important when you're competing against others.

eta:

This thread would be much more helpful if you explained what the job is (at least vaguely) and explained the value of the internship. If you take the job, do you mean you're dropping out of school? I'm confused.

I assume the job isn't related to your degree? Unless you absolutely need the extra money from the first job, take the internship.

Having a summer internship on your resume that is directly related to your degree will look a lot better than a bar tending gig. You could even use the lower pay as evidence of your dedication to gaining relevant experience in your chosen field during full time interviews after graduation.

Right now, do whatever one looks better on your resume. You probably won't stay there after you graduate anyway, so....

If you think your skills will wow them, take the internship for the experience with a potentionally higher job offer later.

Do NOT get the quick money out of the gate for your first job out of college, as it has a disporporationate impact on your career.

So.. what are you majoring in? Is the job a contract position or a full-time offer?
