Hundreds of miles from home? Hundreds of miles from your destination?

Detail how you improvised and handled things like a boss.

ETA: Have you ever had to bring your car to a strange shop in the middle of nowhere?

Really?

ETA: My wife's car broke down on a family trip to Denver. We had just reached CO and I had no idea what was wrong with the car. Turned out that she had 9 days before her complimentary roadside service expired and 2 weeks remaining on the recall to fix her faulty transmission.

I recall one family trip from AP to Shreveport when our car broke down in Alec. It was a sunday, so the only mechanic shop open was the one at Wal-Mart. After 3 hours, they fixed the issue, but lost the keys to the van. It took another 2 hours for them to get them back from the mechanic who accidently left them in his pocket when he drove home for the day

Road trip one time and my alternator failed. Thought it was battery at first, got jump, it failed later on. We were heading to San Antonio and it was getting late.

I hitch hiked to the next town, found a garage, bought an alternator. Went to a Walmart bought a socket set. Hitch hiked back to the car. (buddies just got high waiting for me to come back) I changed alternator on the side of I-10 and was back on the road in less than three hours after break down.

Had much better breakdown stories from growing up with the RVs. One time we had a water pump fail 50 miles from the nearest town. Another time a RV fuel line leaked and caught fire and we burned a good bit of the Grand Teton forest down. Then drove back from Wyoming in a rental car.

Last break down was current truck, bought it in Boulder. It had a bad battery. I had to walk a mile to a walmart and back both times carrying a battery.

I can do anything short of pulling a motor on side the road.

Right rear tire went flat.

Jacked truck up, took tire off.
Re-positioned jack under right rear portion of axle.
Used ratchet straps to secure jack.

Rolled on it for 20 miles or so. Don't know how the hell it worked, to this day. This is freshman year of college on the way to the beach with about 20 cases of beer in the truck bed.

edit: I think I had a few ubolts in the back of the truck that were important to the process. Oh and a pair of clamps and vicegrips.

Picture this but with a rolling jack holding it up, tied off.

I was on an 8 hour drive last weekend. Gave me time to reflect about a lot of things. Had a good cry.

Yes, one time I was driving to California when I saw a sign in Scottsdale that said "Bras 50% OFF!"

I was so disappointed when I found out they were talking about pricing that it took me several minutes to collect myself and get back on the road.

My fiancé's car broke down in the middle of nowhere on her way to lubbock, I know lubbock is the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. She used Facebook to find someone that was close enough to help, but she had to sit there for a couple of hours.

Couple of days later she saw on the news that some girl like 5 minutes from where she broke down got abducted on the same night and was brutally raped and murdered on a deer meat processing machine, or something like that. Lucky it wasn't her.

Here is the story. Apparently she lived.

Yea, not me but my buddies truck broke down on the way to panama city for our high school senior trip.

I always keep a ratchet set and some other tools in my car so i was able to take care of it. turns out his fuel pump in a tahoe decided to go out at 120,000 miles (common problem he should've had checked out before we left). I changed it out in about 2 hours. my partying was paid for he first night we were there.

When I was moving from PA to FL, the car broke down just south of DC. It was in the afternoon and I was lucky in that I was close to an interstate exit. I made it off the highway and then found a shop a few blocks from the exit. They worked on it until about 7 or 8 pm and then figured out that they needed a part they didn't have (fuel filter if I remember right). Parts stores were closed by then of course. So they took us to a hotel and said they'd get on it first thing in the morning when they could get the part they needed. We were back on the road before noon. We still had a long drive ahead because the movers were going to be at the new house the next day. So we had to get from DC to Tallahassee in a day but we made it.

tl;dr I wasn't a boss but the mechanic that fixed the car damn sure was.

Another time right after I graduated from LSU, I was living in Houston and drove back to BR for the Carlotta St. Halloween party. Started to overheat west of LC. I opened the hood and could see I was leaking coolant but it wasn't gushing out. I just happened to have most of a gallon of antifreeze so I poured that in. At the next rest stop added more water and filled up the jug. Had to stop pretty often to add more water from the jug and then replenish that when I'd get to a rest stop. Limped like that all the way to BR, stopping at every rest stop along the way. What had happened was that the water inlet had cracked so I found somebody to braze it and I was good to go again.
