All the news outlets are saying that she's the first African-American swimmer to win a gold.

What to black people in Europe call themselves because I seriously doubt it's an "African-American".

Is she the first black female swimmer?

I heard them talking about it and thought it was pretty odd and was wondering what others thought.

Really not trying to be racist by any means but if it is please delete. Just a curious observer.

Just the media further dividing the country along racial lines. Nothing more.

The Media's PC BS is so bad that they call Blacks in France African-Americans.

CNN "Not African American"

CNN French "African-Americans"

I was having a conversation with a black co-worker one time, and he was referring to indigenous African people as African-Americans.

She is black and won a gold medal. That is legit and the story. AA is such a stupid term.

I remember when Charlize Theron called herself an African-American at an awards show. No one laughed.

Well, she is actually from Africa, so there's that.

It was the first black in USA history. It is a big deal. But, I just want the focus to be where it needs to be. As a swim coach in the blackest state in the country, I am using it as a recruiting tool. 40% of MS is black and less than 5% of our swimmers are black. I am tired of losing 35% of the population because of stereotypes.

My black friends and colleagues would be so weirded out if I said the words "African-American". Its just fricking awkward.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with calling people "black" with proper connotation. Nothing.

Because she is? I wasn't paying close attention to the commentators but I only heard she was the first female AA to win a gold.

I don't think they were making a statement about anything besides her being the first female AA to win gold in swimming. Not sure where Europe comes into this but I might just be confused

Yeah I'm seeing some grumbling about the coverage this morning, which is disappointing.

Good for her. As long as they don't pretend she broke through some ceiling of racism in the sport of swimming, I'm fine with celebrating the accomplishments of the "first black person to ___________"

Are they saying she's the first black woman to win a gold or a medal? Or the first black American woman?

If people in Europe are from Africa, they call themselves African. If they are from another country, they call themselves by that country's name.

We just have 315 million retards in this country and most of them couldn't point out Africa on a map
