Has anyone used HomeAway/VRBO recently?

Expedia bought them last year for almost $4 billion.

Now, not only do the owners pay fees to rent their Condos/Homes on the site, the renters end up paying a fee to them for using the site.

I booked a 3BR at Waterscape over Spring Break and had to pay a $100 fee to Home Away in addition to the rental cost.

Who wants to start a new vacation rental site to compete with them?

How could they possible be worth 4 billion dollars?

They've got an insane number of properties all over the globe and were about 15 years ahead of AirBNB.

I've been talking to the owner I just booked with and he said he's about to dump them if it doesn't improve. He said since Expedia bought them, they have become a real pain in the arse.

A couple months ago found the same property cross listed on VRBO and AirBNB and booking it through AirBNB was $70 cheaper.

Used to use VRBO but now mostly stick to ABB

My dad dropped them as a lister of his beach rental property for these exact fees. I cringed when i saw some of the fees.

I'm real shortsighted... I'm just trying to cut out the middleman, not reinvent the wheel.

That's pretty doubtful. Airbnb is great for sub $1000 stays, but it's laughable to talk about vrbp's fees compared to airbnb as airbnb is worse. Vrbo literally raised their fees because airbnb was charging more than them by a substantial amount to guests.

Airbnb is too expensive for more expensive vacations, their pricing needs to scale down more.

Yes a third party needs to come in. It's cheaper to find your property to stay on those wenpbsites and then book directly with the owner.

I own a rental cabin and for us airbnb has become much more user friendly for both the host and the guest and airbnb's fees are much lower than vrbo's. Virtually all of our bookings are sub-$1,000, so I can't speak to your distinction about vrbo being a better deal than airbnb when you get above that.

Vrbo used to make it easy for the guest to book directly with the host. The host pays to be on it, so they should make their money that way. Now vrbo punishes the host by making your property hard to find if a booking isn't made through them.

And yes, the best deal is to negotiate directly with the host if you can find one without the use of these sites.
