I generally can find pretty decent women to date through people I know or meet (mid 40's divorced guy) but my friend (about the same age) swears by Tinder, Bumble, Match. He's single, never been married and looks for younger women.

Although I haven't personally seen any of these 'gems' he has found!

My mindset is that they all seem to be bait and switch, or extremely photoshopped, old photos, or worn out women on there.

Call me stupid but I like to see the merchandise in person before spending time, but maybe it's all changed. Am I missing out or is it still better the old fashioned way, meet and greet in person?

Depends on your city.

Needs to be a big one because that's where chicks go online to date.

That's why your first date, whether you met online or not, is simply meeting somewhere for a drink.

If she ends up being a 300 lb crazy chick, well having one beer with a 300 lb nutjob won't kill anybody.

What about people who just move to a city and don't know anyone?

FWIW, whenever I've been on a tinder date, it's been super awkward. Never really had any interest in seeing the ones I went out with again. But that isn't saying there aren't people out there.

Yes

But tinder is way past its prime

- has gimmicks you pay for
- no longer only on iPhones

When it first came out it had no stigma and was geared toward colleges aged people. Now it is looked at as super grimy like match.com

I know two folks who were married to others, divorced, and then found each other on match.com.

They lived a few hours apart, but they hit it off and have been married for a few years now, apparently happily.

If you can't figure out which ones are gonna catfish you, you deserve to be catfished.

I did it for a while without much success. Just finding a girl who can keep up with me mentally eliminates 98% of girls around me. Out of that 2%, 1% are unattractive, and I don't have anything in common with another 0.5%. If you're willing to settle, it's perfect. If you're in a major city, it works well also. There just isn't much of a supply around my area.

Eta: So in a metro area with probably 500k people near me, I'd say maybe only 10-15 are worth talking to. Find something you like doing, and then find some girls doing it

Have a divorced friend (late 30s) that only uses LinkedIn and Facebook. His concept is that the women are already prescreened because they have mutual friends and he can get to the heart of how they look by looking at other pictures on Facebook or their career with LinkedIn. He's scoring tons of late 30s early 40s divorcees. Granted he lives in a big city so he has a large pool.

Found mine at Sparkology. Closed member screening site. Well it was back then.

Invitation or referral only.

I recommend it if you're looking for something semi to serious and want professional women.

I was on Tinder for less than a month, hooked up with two girls (both late 20's independent professionals in the Jackson area with no kids, but were pretty boring), then met my future wife, who was a business owner in Oxford area. We knew of each other from mutual friends, but nevertheless that's how we officially got together... I hear from friends that it's completely different now. Gotta pay for certain parts or something.

I'm sure that I'm the top percentile on success rate, but I guess I had impeccable timing with that app.

Not a dating site per se, but I met my SO on FB. She was a HS classmate of one of my old fraternity brothers.
