Next up, a debate with the parole board? The Ivy League's finest debate team was defeated by a team of prisoners from a maximum-security prison in New York state. The three-man Eastern New York Correctional Facility team was declared the winner on Sept. 18 after debating for an hour with Harvard's team, which won the national title this year, the AP reports. In a Facebook post, the Harvard undergraduates said they were proud to lose to the "phenomenally intelligent and articulate team" of inmates. The prison team—which wasn't allowed to use the Internet for research—made the case against allowing undocumented children into public schools, a position with which they personally disagreed.
The three inmates, who are all serving time in Napanoch, N.Y., for violent crimes, have been studying as part of an initiative led by nearby Bard College. Before last month's Harvard debate, they had already scored victories against West Point and a University of Vermont team, reports the Wall Street Journal

that's actually pretty cool. Too bad they chose crime and not something else though.

This is funny, but doesn't college debate have a whole bunch of quirky rules?

Is the debate team coach going to get fired?

What a bunch of morons.

Well to be fair, they did have more time to prepare...

Too much time on their hands...

Without clicking the link, is this one of those stupid fricking debates where they yell gibberish and shite and call it modern debate tactics?

Prisoners know how to focus, I mean they had limited outside distractions.

I got the impression that it was a point, counterpoint, rebuttal sort of debate.

So the inmates beat Harvard's debate team in a completely subjective competition? Let's see how they compare on the SATs or any objective competition of intelligence.

Cool story, but seems like an easy case to make...

I"ll skip over the obvious questions/observations and ask...how did this even start? Like, how did Ivy League schools first think, "hmmm let's take our team to play some other folks...how bout the nearest prison?"

I imagine they have a lot of time to practice.

What difference would that make? They won the competition at hand. I'm willing to bet that they're not retarded
