Sounds awful. I'm glad my parents got educated and broke out of poverty.

One window unit and an attic fan

My 90 year old grandfather still goes without A/C. He has a large window unit that we bought for him years ago, but he refuses to run it. He only uses box fans situated in each room of his house.

Bet it smells great in there.

Grew up with A/C but lived in a non-air conditioned dorm at LSU because the rooms were bigger and it was shared space.
It didn't seem as hot back then as it is now. I can remember taking more than one shower a day.

Who would know? It's not like they visit him.

They didn't have AC in the middle school or high school I attended in Louisiana. It sucked.

When I was a kid, we used to go to the old family farm in Baldwin,MS. My great uncle and family still lived in the old house (was an old shotgun style house, that used to be a school). They did not have AC....it was always hot as hell, but we had a blast. Still some of the best fried chicken I've ever had.

Growing up in the South having central A/C was something that was just expected. I moved to NYC during the December months so central A/C wasn't on my mind when we moved into our apartment. The first day we needed it was when I realized we didnt' have central A/C. We had radiators for the heat. Central A/C isn't that common in the northeast.

My Grandmothers house didn't have A/C until about 10 years ago(2 window units that were occasionally turned on when it got up around 100). She had 10 foot ceilings and pecan trees shading the front of the house. Even up around 90 degrees it was actually fairly comfortable in there with the fans running.
BTW, she was OCD about cleaning so smell was never an issue.

The house I grew up in was built in the late 1800's was obviously built without AC. While I grew up with it in the house, it was clear they designed it to keep it as cool as possible.
The windows all lined up to the front and back of the house so the breeze could move through. 13' ceilings, porch coverage, shaded trees all around, and what is now the laundry room was an insulated ice room with a door for block ice delivery.

People had larger windows on their houses, higher ceilings and ceiling fans. Hard wood floors as well. Part of it was air flow. Part of it was getting used to it.
People also used to sleep on the porch at night when it was cooler.
Hell, I was in Hanoi Vietnam for business a couple of weeks ago and those little frickers didnt even break a sweat. it was hotter than frick and for anybody not used to the tropical heat it was a wet tee shirt contest in a bout 10 minutes.

we didn't have ac in school when I was young.
