graduation stoles for being a minority

Went to a graduation ceremony earlier. Noticed a lot of black students wearing a stole.
Asked a guy what that is for.
ETA: After doing some research, it seems that the cultural center does give out stoles as part of a robing ceremony for minority students to celebrate their accomplishments.
And there is a lavender graduation for LGBT students.

On my campus, students wear a sash if they're affiliated with specific student groups.
Athletics is a group. There's a veterans group. There are groups based on ethnicity. There are groups based on sexual orientation / identity. Etc.

As a recent college graduate, I can attest that he was not. They really do give out graduation stoles specific to minorities or non-heterosexuals.
