Anyone have the new one they put out late 2014, the hero. I know its a cheaper model with less features. Interested in getting a GoPro, so the $129 the Hero retails for seems like a better option then the more expensive versions.

I got the base model Hero for Christmas.

It has worked just fine. I tested it out on my dog yesterday when we went for a walk, and the video looks good.

It isn't as fancy as the higher models, but it works.

I got the Hero 3 Silver for Christmas this year. It's a pretty sweet little camera. Takes some sweet pictures as well as videos. I just need to learn how to edit the videos.

Make sure it has wifi so it can link to your phone and you can control it that way. The older versions don't have this.

The base model Hero lacks WiFi as well.

Around 2 hours 30 minutes of continuous recording I think.

Wifi to your phone allows you to remotely operate your camera as well as frame shots and browse and delete files.

You could always buy a solar powered charger or something other mobile charger if you think you'll be recording more than 2 and half hours.

I plan to use it mostly for kayaking and swimming when it warms up, so I shouldn't be too hampered by the battery life.

Without this ability, you would have to do all those things on your computer I assume.

Yes. You download some software that allows you to edit and export in different formats/quality levels (720, 1080, "YouTube" quality format).

I've found 2 extra batteries and a charger on Amazon for $40. The knockoff accessories on Amazon aren't too shabby either, and MUCH cheaper than the GoPro brand

You may want to look into Replay XD. They make an all around better camera than GoPro. LINK

I have a Swann Freestyle HD that I bought a couple years ago that has worked well for me and fits all of the go pro accessories. I've used it snorkeling, hiking, mounted it on a bike. I don't use it a ton but when I go on vacation which is a couple times a year I use it a lot.

They're also significantly more expensive.
