If you don't have time for a dog please don't get one.
That's the main thing.
No offense to anyone, but leaving a dog in a kennel 8+ hours a day (or 16, if it sleeps in there at night) is a cruel life IMO. Imagine spending your entire day/night in a small cage. If you can't be there for it often or you don't have a back yard it can live in, I say don't get it in the first place.
ETA: This is a good point also:
Adopt a stray- crate training is waaaay better than 24/7 in a shelter than the gas chamber. He will be eternally thankful for a home, even if you are short of perfect.
