Was he detained after an assault of the off duty officer or just after he disrespected the man for being on his lawn?

I've not heard which. I understand though. Put your hands on a cop. You probably won't be able to let him go.

But if the kid is cutting across your lawn and you say something and he mouths off as he's passing by? Do you need to escalate that to putting hands on a kid? Why? He is a neighborhood resident. He is in plain clothes. Does anyone know he's a cop? They very well may have known? But also they may not. I was 13 like all of us were. We had get off my lawn guy. The dude was a dick. We played football in the road or catch. If the ball rolled into his yard, he'd call the police. This is an unfenced front yard. 4-5 paces to go get a baseball. Here come the cops.

Yeah. My opinion on this is really predicated on what lead up to it.

If the kids just mouthed off or even said I'll shoot you, thats no reason to go put him in some headlock. He was just being a dumbass kid trying to puff his chest in front of his buddies. Then the cops should be in serious shite. Even more serious with the gun pulling. The cops inability to control himself lead to all of this.

That of course changes if the kids assaulted him without any provocation beyond words. Then the kid is actually being detained for assault and the aftermath of the other kids ganging up on the cop falls on the kid and not the officer.
