Investigators said they had so far been unable to retrieve any data from the plane’s cockpit voice recorder, and the inquiry has been hampered further, an official said, by the discovery that the second black box, which was found on Wednesday, was severely damaged, and its memory card dislodged and missing.

Was it caused by the crash, or does it appear to be more suspicious than that?

they must be outsourcing the black boxes, second one I've heard of recently that's been damaged or rendered useless

Well, if the memory card was there it could tell us how the memory card got lost, but it's not, so I guess we'll never know.

Saw a pic of it this morning. Pretty banged up.

Would make sense that they'd make the plane from this same material

I obviously didn't read the article. Just wondering if the box appeared to be pried open by a person, damaged beyond being able to keep the card in, or if it were in perfect condition and still had the card missing.

I understand these things are supposed to be tough and durable, but after seeing that the plane was completely obliterated, is it possible that the box just broke apart and is scattered about the area?

I don't know man. There were only 2 paragraphs in the article. One saying how the recovery effort was continuing and the one I posted.

I was expecting it to be longer. I guess I should have read it.

there were times when we'd erase those bitches after setting brakes, often been used as ammo in the age old game of frick the pilot, can't do that anymore

No, they are designed to withstand crashes. I have literally never heard of a black box not being recovered, even on aircraft that completely erupted into balls of flames.

The plane I used to fly had a cockpit voice recorder that you could erase. I erased that fricker on the reg.

I don't think the black boxes are accessible from inside the plane. Most likely the crash. I imagine they'll be able to recover the data from the voice recorder, and it'll just be a matter of going over the area with a fine tooth comb to find the memory card from the FDR.

My "reasonable explanation" theory is malfunction leading to hypoxia.

My theory is hijackers programming the autopilot with a flight path below radar, but neglecting to take the mountain range into account.
