Anyone go to school there or know anyone that has? We are taking my son and niece up there this weekend to check it out. We've visited DC before, but have no idea what the city is like for college students or what that university is like. Any insights would be appreciated.

TIA.

Fantastic university academically. Underrated in a lot of ways because it's fairly new. And the university is suburban enough he'll have access to the amenities of DC but be insulated from the crime.

It's a big school that's 30 miles or so West of DC. Would she be staying in Virginia or DC? DC is very expensive.

George Mason isn't in DC. Fairfax is an ok place as far as I can tell. My sister lived in the same county. It's pretty spread out. As far as I know the university is fine, but as someone else pointed out, I believe its mostly known as a commuter school.

My sister and many friends went to GMU. It's a big school that's growing a reputation for good academics recently. Located in Fairfax VA, roughly 20-25 mins away from the district. Big time commuter school with most strident a living in northern Virginia.

I went to high school in Fairfax County. Like most have said, big time commuter school. Not that close to the Metro, a car is a must, even for freshmen, it's actually more like 45 minutes outside D.C., due to traffic (which is a constant on the Beltway.)

The county is super expensive. And honestly, probably pretty boring for an 18-22 year old. If D.C. is the desired landing spot, is George Washington a possibility?

I graduated there in 1995. Very good school academically. Very diverse. I had friends from just about every part of the world. I am glad I went there even though I was born and raised in Louisiana and all LSU. Just good to get diff world view, even for a conservative. A lot of the students live nearby and commute in but there are dorms and town houses nearby that students share. When i was there the facilities for things like working out and such were fantastic.

This is one of the primary attractions for the school. The other would be the availability of business internships and co-ops. Just about every major corporation has some kind of presence there.

I'll have to check the cost of living calculator. I haven't done that.

Rent shouldn't be drastically different than any other school as long as he lives in the George Mason's dorm and apartments. That would probably be the best way to go for the first year or two...then meet a few friends and split a house/apt. in DC.

The tuition there is WAY out of our budget.

The University has shaken off its reputation as the most expensive school in the country since it became the first to break the $50,000 threshold in 2007. It skimmed out of the top 10 on Forbes magazine’s most expensive colleges list in 2010 by just $25. Now, GW sits at No. 40, just $1,270 less than the No. 10-ranked school.

I think my neice is going to look at it, but I don't know why. They can't afford it either.....

Lived and worked in the Alexandria/Fairfax area for five years. The kids that worked for me from GMU were pretty impressive. The mix of living/schooling in a suburban area next to a major city is pretty nice. And DC is a great city to live next to. Always something going on in DC on the weekends. Plus, you're in driving distance to New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlantic City...

A good friend went there for grad school and stayed there to teach. I've been to visit several times. It's a cool area, kind of suburban but within a short trip of a lot of good destinations. If your son is into American history, there are plenty of day trips to be taken from there.

Interviewed in DC a few years back at a consulting company in Rosslyn. Dude that interviewed me was a GMU grad. He was slightly hispanic and had a goatee. This was a very professional group. It kind of threw me off.

Put your kid in James Madison instead of GMU. Better all around.

Not sure why you are being down voted bc that's 100% and I can tell anyone that first hand bc I grew up about 15mins from campus.
