Georgia Department of Transportation officials said Tuesday that they expect to reopen I-85 in Buckhead by June 15.

GDOT is using contracting incentives and other means to expedite reconstruction of one of the main highways into the heart of Atlanta, officials said at a press conference Tuesday morning.

The state fire marshal and insurance commissioner are also being asked to review the practice of storing materials under bridges. The fire that brought down a section of I-85 was caused by ignited construction surplus material stashed under the elevated section of the interstate.

Why can't they pre-assemble most of that stuff off site then haul it in for construction?

Beams are fabricated off-site, but they're concrete and need time to cure. Also many of the support columns were heavily damaged and need to be replaced:

B'ham had to deal with this twice in the mid 2000s. With incentives in contact it will be done way quicker than expected.

Does he even know about prestressed beams? some of those have to be in the forms for 14-30+ days.
