The church has rules, and the priest has the duty to make sure those rules are followed. Don't like them, don't go.

Didn't the church pass out a pamphlet stating that you should not receive communion without a clean conscience? Essentially you may need to go to confession first?

Right, you need to be in a state of grace.
Saying you are in a SSM is pretty much a public admonition you are not in a state of grace. At that point the priest has a duty to deny the body and blood of Jesus less his soul be in jeopardy.
